Aswel as the Web Browsing, Word Processing and Powerpoints, i was wondering which would be best and then the build quality so i can get an idea of value for money.

Oops, was browsing the web doing some research and some websites say the HP Compaq Mini 311c cannot have a 2gb Ram stick put into it, is this true? if not, what types of ram should i buy when i eventually purchase this product?

I don't think that's true. There's a monster thread about the 311c on this forum, and plenty upgraded to 2 gigs.

For build quality, I really like the Asus EeePC line. Dunno about the HP though. It's easy to check, your local big retailer should have quite a lot of netbooks on display.

Upgrade to 2gb or upgrade to 1gb + 2gb with a total of 3gb memory in the netbook. And my nearest OcUK retailer is somewhere in newcastle, like 1 hours drive or so from me, and i do have a currys, pc world and even comet retailers in my nearest industrial park not so far from my town with about 15 minutes drive, so i might check them out and ask some question about it, and if your not too busy where about is this thread?

Haha, finally :) Browsed that forum thread when it was release in stock on OcUK and just happens to be on the front page of new posts on my threads screen :)

Went up to Page 5 and saw Raikiri i think and he posted pictures confirming a upgrade which i believe i can stick a 2gb ram stick in there at 1066mhz or something ddr3 and pc3 8500 :) will get my netbook and then buy the ram stick a few weeks later :) Thanks.

hmmm somehow my post disappeared.

If you go with a netbook, I was recommending a high-res screen (1366 x 764), the netbook standard res is a pain tbh, if you gonna do some work.

The 311c will trade battery life for Ion GPU. The Atom processor is rather weak, I would think it will be OK for office work, but nothing too fancy.

If you want to go the cheap route, and you value battery life, I would recommend a standard pinetrail netbook with a high res screen, such as the Dell Mini 10 HD (Dell Mini 10 is a bit tricky to upgrade to 2 gigs).

If you want a ultra-portable with more versatility, a 13'' CULV notebook such as the UL30A, Toshiba T130, Acer 3810TZ would be better imo. They can be had for sub-£400, and come with a dual core, 3 gigs, 13'' screen, GMA4500HD, 8 hours+ battery life and win 7. They are like bigger netbooks and more comfortable, while still being pretty light and slim. I don't go anywhere without my UL30A :)

Ye, looked at the Dell Mini 10 and the 1012 version (which has 6-cell battery built in) but i found that you have to take out all of the keyboard, touchpad, hdd and some other pieces just to stick in the ram, and i thought it would be too fussy. the HP Mini 311c comes with a led backlit screen at 1366x768 resolution, same as my 18.5inch x193hq acer monitor i got with my computer so i think that would be my better choice. Regarding the ION and the cpu, im not too bothered as when i take it to college, there a mains everywhere so it will most likely be plugged in and if not, ill only be mobile for 2-3 hours or so, and even then a full battery should do the trick with only browsing and some word processing a reckon.

I was originally planning to spend a low £150 on a netbook, just for what i need to do as explained above, but then i found i went up in price and stopped at like £250-£260 mark as i really want a decent, and fast netbook such as the HP Mini 311c or the Asus 1001p, but the bigger screen and the ION and the easy ram upgrade makes me want the HP Mini 311c.

If you have any other suggestions on netbook for around £260 mark, please tell me, i would really love to see more options, as i've seen reviews on the 311c and they say it is not as good in build quality compared with the asus and dell/sony netbooks.

I don't think many can beat the 311c for the price, given its features. Ion Netbooks are either far more expensive, or you get the bog-standard netbooks.

I'd just go for it, but keep in mind that for an extra £100, you can get a notebook that will be more versatile, powerful, and comfortable (and with win 7).

Hmm i suppose, but then again, i don't have another £100 to spend unfortunately :|

I just bought a 311 the other week. Love it. Put Windows 7 on it, upgraded to 3GB by adding 2GB stick and hacked the nVidia drivers so it picks up ION not just ION LE which gives a nice boost in the Windows Experience Index.

Don't have laptop with me so can't post screenshots just now. Check the myhpmini forums.

thats what i plan on doing, apart from hacking the nvidia drivers as id leave that till i had some spare time and had looked at some tutorials etc, but its either the 311 or the asus 1001p which looks really nifty, but i do like the look and the idea of the 11.6" 1366x768 display on the 311

Nimz if you could help me out with hacking the nVidia drivers to get full ION I would gladly send you some beer tokens. My email is in trust, I've just upgraded to Windows 7 and I have the 3GB RAM so that would be the last thing that I need to do to pimp this wee beasty.

I've looked for guides but there's not one that I've found that has links to the correct drivers etc.

Thanks in advance!
