so the wifes 8800gs 385mb has started acting up and obviously it needs replacing. the good thing is the wife said straight away that i should get a new card so she can have mine, a 260gtx 216. i do wish she was that agreeable about other things as well but hey ho.

so its down to the 460 1gb at around the £180 mark or the 470 for about £225 ish, this will be paired up with my i7 920 @ 4Ghz on a ud3r.

I'm not too worried about the noise issue as i play with headphones on or the heat for that matter as i have good airflow and it will be added to my water loop at some time in the future when i get round to moving everything to a new case.

the question is: is the 470 £45 pounds better than the 460....?

both will be clocked of course 800Mhz or so i expect.

the 470 will use more power than the 460 as well, but if u have the PSU, and the money, then the 470 is the better choise

Even with my 1100 watt PSU, I wouldnt consider buying the GTX 470. The 460 SLI is unbelievable performance and scaling for £350.

The reason why the G100 chips are reduced so much is so that Nvidia can clear them out before releasing the full 384 shader G104 card.

But someone has to buy the GTX 470s and 480s so we can eventually see those, so anyone else go ahead and buy them :p.

GTX 460 SLI is just unbelievable:

For single card, the GTX470 would be better performance vs price.

However, if you are talking about the possibility of going SLI in the future (if you wife would let you :D), then GTX460 1GB would probably be better, as the Corsiar 750W will be able to cope with GTX460SLI, but not GTX470 SLI (which would require upgrading to a more powerful PSU).

So it probably depend on how things work between you and your wife :p
If you can only upgrade in the future because of the same scenerio happens again, that would mean you won't be going SLI anyway as you gonna need to give your wife the existing card, so might as well get a GTX470 for now :D

750watts would be fine for 2 x 470's. Get the best you can afford at the time, why get the slower 460 when you can have a 470.

I like the wife ,she is defo a keeper. Dose she make a good cheesecake too? :D Anyways if the difference between the 470 and 480 is only £45 then I would personally lean towards the 480. Both cards would be a large upgrade.

Of course, but the reality of the prices for GTX470 and GTX480 is £220 vs £350, which is £125 difference not £45 :D

What PSU your wife's PC got by the way? Only asking because if her PSU can handle a GTX470, should the same scenerio happen in the future, she can take your GTX470 and you got an excuse to upgrade again :p

the only cards you should buy at the moment if noise doesn't matter too much

5670>5750>GTX 460 768MB>GTX 470>GTX 480

I was thinking about this issue over the last few days. I came to the conclusion that the Gigabyte GTX460 at £175 was the better buy overall. The GTX470 is certainly not overpriced at £225 though because you never get 1:1 performance increase with cost.

Really i just felt like the GTX460 is plenty fast for the money and clocks well, and even though the GTX470 is more powerful the real deciding issue for me was noise level. I'm not saying the GTX470 is a hairdryer, by all accounts it's not half as bad as the original reports were claiming, but it is still quite noticeable especially when overclocked.

I have my PC on the desk right next to me, and i run all my fans at 7v or below because i like a 'silent' system, so for me the Gigabyte GTX460 seemed the best option.

So basically i would say this, on performance grounds alone, yes the GTX470 probably does justify the extra money. However if noise/power/heat are important factors for your individual situation then it's not such an easy call.

i had a GTX 470 with 775 on the core and some on memory i had 17k plus on 3dmark vantage

with a GTX 460 @ 825mhz core its more like 14800 3dmark vantage.

thats like 15% better performance...

You sure not talking about GPU performance?

That's with my 5850 with 6% increase in voltage.
