Unplayable you say? Hyperbole? Nail...on...head. apart from the bug I mentioned above and a slight tweak to the end boss game mechanics I would be hard pushed to notice any differences from when the game first came out to now. Seriously.
As for item upgrades you get things called relics and charms (RC). You have to find 3 or 5 matching pieces respectively in order to complete the RC. Once complete the RC is awarded some stats and a completion bonus. You can then fuse this RC to a weapon, shield, armour etc further improving its stats. It can be a very fine balancing act choosing between damage types, resistances and so on.
You also get things called artefacts which require scrolls and/or completed RC's to complete. You can then equip a maximum of one artefact to your character to further improve stats.
As with other arpg's you get char classes and skill tree's to choose from. You get awarded skill points for levelling up and completing quests.
So as you can see there is a plethora of 'upgrades and so forth' that'll keep to tweaking for hours on end. Plus there is always that looting mentality that keeps you going in the hope of finding that next purple (legendary) item.
