Guys, any ideas what the ticker settings does for the BBC News app?

I Just noticed it in my settings, and saw that it defaulted to 'Refresh Ticker - Every 5 minutes'.

I was just wondering, does this mean that it refreshes itself every 5 minutes regardless of whether the app is running or not? If so, could be a bit of a drain on the old battery life.

Yeah, as far as I can tell it means exactly that. I set mine to app startup as I don't really see any value in having it update itself over the course of the day in the background. I only want the most recent news.

I'm quite disappointed with the BBC app really. It crashes quite often and when it does work it just seems... fiddly. Some of the buttons are in the wrong place in my opinion.

Thanks for the response, I've now set it to app startup too.

I thought I noticed my battery life wasn't as good since installing this, but never thought about looking in the settings. Today it seems to be back to normal.

another one here that dident think about it.

This is the problem with background apps they can do things that will eat your battery

i used to quit every app out of the menu when i wasnt using my phone but that was a pain and Steve came out and said users dont need to know how or what background apps are doing.

I assumed by ticket it actually only meant the scrolling ticker at the top of the app with 'breaking news'....

I quite like the app, but my biggest issue is that it won't update the minute by minute sports coverage, even if you hit the refresh button.

That was my understanding of it too, but then I couldn't figure out why the setting allows for such lengthy refresh gaps, so I can only assume that it does this continually, whether the app is open or not.

I couldn't see anything on the BBC site to explain it either.
