Have the upgrade itch and was wondering if i should switch from the 4850 to the xfx 5850 OR get another 4850, i mainly play stuff like WoW, Dawn of War and a few FPS's.

Rest of the system is-

Core 2 Duo E6600 @ 3.40GHZ
Asus P5Q Deluxe
8G Corsair Dominator
X-Fi Extreme Gamer fatal1ty Pro
WD Raptor X 150GB
Antec 1200
Windows 7 Ultimate 64

Any help is as always much appreciated :)

Going from a 4850 to a 5850 is quite an upgrade.

You'll seeing 60-100% boost in most modern games.

I'd also recommend the 460 from nVidia which is about 50£ cheaper than the 5850 but 15-20% slower.

Might as well wait for the 6xxx series now or get a 460 and overclock the hell out of it if you want a card now and consider sli at a later date (if your mobo supports it, otherwise 5850 may be a wiser choice down this route). Those would be my options around that price point.

With your CPU at that speed, I would say you should just grab a GTX460 1GB and overclock it. Going 5850 or above most likely won't give you noticable extra performance due to the CPU limitation...

Just to clarify, the performance difference is noticeable at any resolution really and will be most likely about 10% on average at least. Some games do prefer Nvidia cards and will give better framerates at lower resolutions with them but same goes for other games with ATI cards.

The cheapest at OcUK GeForce 460 1GB costs £170 and the cheapest Radeon 5850 is £200, so only £30 difference there. You have to justify if paying extra 18% is worth 11% increase in performance (or more depending on resolution you play at). Both cards overclock really well and will match their higher equivalents (GeForce 470 and Radeon 5870 respectively).

CPU won't be a limiting factor unless you play at really low resolution. It only becomes such when you add another GPU into the configuration when you really have to keep up with CPU clock to have better minimum framerates.
