I seriously don't know where to start.

I would like to upgrade what I have currently to something a bit special. I'm looking at Audi and BMW at the moment. These are certainly top of my list, Audi first.

I have previously been considering the S3, but I'm liking the look of the Z4 too at the moment.

Budget-wise, I want to keep below 20k but could go above if necessary (shouldn't be!).

Might sound odd, but what sort of questions to I need to start asking myself in order to shorten the list down to something I can then turn in to test drives and REAL options etc.

I really am stuck.

Audi A3/S3
Audi A5/S5
BMW Z4

These are currently topping my list.
 
Do you want new or used?
If used, how old?
Do you prefer 4wd or RWD?
what sort of use does your car get?

Those would be the sort of questions that can start narrowing it down, however, with the 3 suggestions you've given, my first thing would be 3 cars is not unreasonable in the slightest to test drive :)
 
I'm going to be annoying and throw the 130i/135i (You know it's worth the extra) into the mix :D

But what sort of car do you want? Coupe, cabrio, hatchback..?

Incidentally, if I had to choose a hot hatch, coupe and sports car for 20k I'd pick the s3, s5 (can they be had for 20k yet?) and z4.

So that's your choice, the z4 will be the better drivers car, the a/s5 is the looker and the s3 for practicality
 
I can't be bothered to narrow down your requirements for you :p There's quite some difference in a A3 and an S5 and it's not often you find them both on the same short-list of cars. You need figure what you want from a car.

If it was me I'd go for the S5 out of that list. However they start at around £27k second hand.
 
Audi A3 = a little normal and boring

S3 = nice enough car but does not feel or look that special


Audi A5 = very nice looking car, the 3.0 TDI is very good

S5 = 20k will not even get you a Cat D

BMW Z4 = nice car but I think it will be hard to get the new shape (could be wrong)

Why dont you look at a E92 330i? 20k will buy you a very nice one and running it will not cost too much
 
Unless you are talking about the old model Z4, the only car in your list for under £20k is the A3/S3, so get that.

All the others are out of budget.
 
I just bought an 07 plate 320i m sport (with 10k on the clock) for £16k (main dealer). Totally recommend a nice Beamer. Although the 3 series is the most popular, so reasonably common, I still think it looks awesome. My brother had an old shape Z4, very nice car, but I found it quite small inside (6ft, 15st).

Like others are saying though, need to narrow your search down a bit. The 3 series would be comparable to an A4 in Audi terms.
