Is Stalker worth a buy?

I'm at the lab part, with Complete mod installed. I was doubtful about it after playing for 1 hour, but now I absolutely love it. Graphics with the complete mod can be up to Metro 2033 levels in some places, and the atmosphere is second to none.

And getting the stalker suit hidden in the first village is a big help for the start of the game. Stops you getting killed quite so often.

soc is good too, but CS is my personal favorate and personaly the best.

but tbh they all fall down on the last mission, they try for a big shoot-out style finale that the game just ain't made for so it's a bit crap :(

Personal i would have preferred an anomaly filled trek to the plant pick ing your way through random and set piece things rather than a big shoot out :(

Cheers, yeah, was looking to get a second hand copy for a couple of pounds. Nothing to lose if I didn't get into it that way.

I also bought SOC and COP on the weekend deal. I played SOC when it was first released and to be fair, i never gave it a chance.

I forced myself into it last night, and have currently spent around 10 hours on it. Loving it so far.

After starting COP last night and only just getting a very little way in, I am not finding the shooting too difficult.

Close targets (i.e. blind dog packs) using the initial AKM74/2U with it's massive recoil turns in to a "can't hit a barn door" fiasco when trying to move away from them whilst shooting. That being said, shooting at bandits who are at a reasonible distance is fine as long as I fire single shots, adjust for drift and crouch.I was able to kill a pseudo dog from the top of the tower on the boat with the guy having the compass anomalies using a single clip. Considering the range I was surprised I could reach it but after seeing the splashes in the water by it I adjusted and it fell dead after a few shots. THB I would have though that was more unrealistic than not being able to kill anything.

Have just upgraded to the AKM74/2 and upgraded with a scope mount and the PSO scope. Money being scares at the moment due to not being able to sell most weapons I find, ammo is a little hard to come by. Only about 30 mins into the game so not gone anomaly hunting yet.

Quick question though. I have two compass anomalies. Should I be getting radiation from them even if they are not equipped ?. I didn't think you did in CS or SOC but I seem to be now after equipping one and then taking it out within a couple of seconds of noticing the radiation sign on the HUD. The sign is still there though.

Cheers

If you get radiation poisoning or other damage like bleeding it will usually stay until you fix it. If you don't fix it then it will eventually kill you.

I have been playing COP for a few hours now and have been artifact hunting in a few of the big anomilies, really liking the game so far!

Cheers Nands, I knew about the bleeding but was unaware of the radiation poisoning from artefacts causing ongoing radiation damage after removal.

I remember not giving stalker a chance when it came out because you needed a supercomputer to max out the lighting. Without maxed lighting it looked like a mod for UT2004.

But now that our computers are able to run it properly, I think I will reinstall SOC and see what ive been missing. BTW how scared will I be playing it?

Play it in the dark with the sound high and in at least 5.1 and the graphics as high as possible, its the only way to play the game and yes if you are like me and really get into your games then your PC chair may resemble that of a rabbit hutch floor afterwards. It is still the most atmospheric game for me. Walking into an unkown building in the dark whilst its thunder and lightening with the zones general night noises and then something starts moving, tell me you didnt brick yourself and I wont believe you

I am only about 6 hours in and have had one scary moment so far. Have to admit though, I screamed like a little girl as I did not expect it at all. Atmosphere throughout the game is superb 8)

err, what!?! :o
ive not got a suit yet and i feel really squishy heh.
can you remember where it is?

if coming from the dealer into the village, 2nd to last house on the left from memory.

The building where Wolf (?) is around the camp fire and has a ladder going up to the loft, climb up the ladder but don't go into the loft. There is a ledge on the left and right. Shimmy along the ledge (you may fall off a few times but keep trying) until you get to the edge of the roof and it's low enough to jump up.

Then you have to do a running jump onto the roof of the next house along.

This takes a few goes unless you get lucky first time.

Keep to the left hand side of the slope on the roof and go right to the back of the house. You will see in the corner, there is a hole in the roof (tiles missing) but the hole is not big enough for you to fall through.

However, crouching with your knife you can smash the container you can see through the hole and surprise, surprise it contains a Merc stalker suit. Lots of armour and pretty much 30% protection on everything else.

Really makes the earlier part of the game much easier especially when fighting soldiers and your aim/weapons are so pants.

Gah, i'm tempted to install SoC and the complete mod just to see how things have changed but the full game alone will take days to dl... sodding 512 internet.

Would play CS but i don't have it.

I've been hooked to SOC for days now. Oblivion Lost is amazing. You can keep your shiny complete mod graphics. The gameplay in OL blows it out of the water!
