iPhone 3GS unlock time with O2

To anyone who has unlocked their iPhone with O2 using the PAYG £15 method, how long did it take before the phone unlocked?

I signed up, topped up £15, asked for the unlock, got 2 work mates to ring me a for 2 minutes a couple of days on the trot (I never made any outgoing calls). Was unlocked in around 4 days. iPhone 3G by the way.

Is the call thing necessary?

I read that you needed to make calls, but i got away with only receiving. So to be totally honest I'm not sure. Sorry
