Elemental: War of Magic was released in some stores and for pre-order customers on Monday, a day ahead of schedule. It’s a mess. As PC gamers we’re used to launch day patches and bug fixes – that’s part and parcel of gaming on our platform. However, the scale of Elemental’s pre-patch problems is appalling and we want to warn you to stay away from the game for now.

What the hell is going on with released games lately  , this is not the only game lately to need a mass of fixes. Commander Conquest of the americas , aliens versus predator 3 and also the problems with singularity.

they didnt learn from demigod? stardoc is losing my respect.

It's actually much worse than demigod what's even worse was this

CEO Brad Wardell says on the game’s site that they’re “definitely glad” people played the pre-patch version because of all the useful crash reports they got. Wanting customers to encounter crashes so that they can be fixed is pretty much the definition of a paid beta test
In response to someone saying Elemental “plays like an early beta” on the Quarter to Three forums, Brad requests that anyone who thinks so “please stay away from our games in the future. I consider it ready for release and if others disagree, don’t buy our games.
:eek::rolleyes:

It's like Derek Smart all over again lol

Jesus wept. Demigod was a disaster release, and never really recovered.. You'd think they'd have learnt a lesson or two!

It's a real pity, as underneath all the bugs and hideous netcode, Demigod should be a great game :/

having given it a quick bash the 1.01v and it seems perfectly stable but the game play just bores me.

The patched version of the game is great. The pre-patched version is a pile of garbage. It's really a shame that they had to ship the pre-patched version, because that's giving a lot of people a terrible impression of the game. It's definitely still a couple of patches away from fully being the game it's supposed to be, but the same thing happened with Galactic Civilizations 2 and that's now considered one of the very best games ever. Give it a few months.

No multiplayer yet... the most obvious example of the game being unfinished. Kind of goes against one of the main tenants of their "Gamer's Bill of Rights" thing.

So dissapointed. Oh well, I'll look for it when it's on sale if I remember.

This Elemental Forum Post announces the release of the promised Day 0 patch for Elemental: War of Magic, updating Stardock's just-released 4X turn-based PC game to version 1.05. There's also a post on PC Gamer that tears into it, saying while it is "one of the most exciting game ideas for a long time," it is "a mess," saying "it’s been shoved out months too soon." They report persistent bugs and crashes on two different computers, and don't mince words, saying: "The game you actually get in the box, or in the initial download if you bought it digitally before today, is riddled with bugs. You should not buy it." They also point to a thread on the Quarter to Three Forums where Stardock's Brad Wardell responds to a complaint saying: "Also, to anyone, like you Ben, saying the game is like an 'early beta' then well, please stay away from our games in the future. I consider it ready for release and if others disagree, don't buy our games."

The PC Gamer article concludes with an update that followed the game being patched: "The problem where tactical battles just show a white screen and are unplayable is now back, even though the interim patch had fixed it. Before last night’s patch, the game was working other than the every half-hour crashes. It hasn’t crashed since the patch, but not being able to fight is worse. Others are already finding the same." The notes from the day 0 patch and word on what they are doing next follow. Continue here to read the full story.

Garth Merenghi.. you sir are a sig hero.

That PCGamer article is gathering a lot of interest.. a bit too much maybe considering he's whining about an old version of the game. Well ok, he updated the article a bit but still.

Perfectly playable here. Then again, the early versions were too.

I'm more annoyed by games that are still broken, months after the release. Games like Operation Flashpoint: Dragon Rising, MW2 and Singularity.

Indeed.

I seem to recall GalCivII at release wasn't much better than Elemental 1.05, but went on to be a real classic. Been playing GalCivII recently with all the patches etc and it is light years (no pun intended) ahead of that release version. I think Elemental will end up the same. For me, Stardock games have always been long-term bets. Not something you play for 10-20 hrs then bin it.

Also what Wardell said was blown way out of proportion, I love how people jump on something without seeing the true context and circumstances it was said in....but some people can't help being emo in whatever they do. The PC gamer guy and the RPS guy are jerks, not the first time they've done something like this. They are true gutter journalists.

Personally, after playing since early beta the game is shaping up to be awesome. Yeah, its a niche game without all the razzamatazz of big titles, but in the long run I'm going to more than get my money's worth....beats these throwaway hyped to crap games we usually get these days.
