I'm sure I can't be the only one who experiences this problem, so I'm wondering if anyone has any cheap and creative solutions?
I have a couple of large external HDDs (1.5Tb and 2Tb), and if either of them is connected when I boot, I can't get past POST with an overclocked FSB. If I disconnect them and reconnect in Windows, I am just fine. The motherboard is a gigabyte UD3 P45, but I've had this problem in the past. I tried a powered USB hub, but that didn't help.
The obvious answer is to disconnect the HDDs and reconnect them in Windows, but I keep my external hard-drives out of the way (they can be a little noisy for the desktop), and like most external HDDs these days, they don't have on-off switches. I can disconnect the USB cable from them and reconnect when needed, but this is hassle I could do without, and unconnected cables have a habit of disappearing down into the cable-spaghetti that exists behind the PC.
One solution I considered was a USB hub with an on-off switch that I can keep within arms reach, but I can't seem to find one (either that or the ones that have such a switch don't list it in the features). So, does anyone know of a cheap USB hub with an "off" switch, or otherwise have any creative solutions to dealing with this problem?
