Ok, im starting off building a new i7 machine for CAD and animation.
I’m looking at different components one at a time so please excuse me popping up all over the place.

So far I have
i7 950 3.06GHz (Bloomfield) (Socket LGA1366)
storage drives 1TB Samsung HD103SJ Spinpoint F3 or F4 SATA 3Gb/s
or
1TB Western Digital WD1002FAEX SATA 6Gb/

may be using raid 0
USB 3 looks good.

Please can some one have a look or change the following motherboards.
looking at Asus Rampage III Gene Intel X58 but only micro ATX.
Asus P6X58D PREMIUM looks like it does everything but the price is a little on the high side.

Cheers

Warren

Rampage II Extreme can be had for £211, or the Gigabyte UD5 for £210:

Both are very good boards, the only criticism I have is that the PCI-E slots on those layouts are too close to together, and would cause multi GPU configurations to heat up too much.

The Asus P6X58D would be my choice of motherboard if I didnt want to stretch for the rampage III extreme. Rampage III Formula will also be released soon at a lower price point, if you are willing to wait, that one would be good to hold on for.

Asus P6X58D-E @ £149 looks like a good board. I know you said £200 but it has USB 3 & SATA 6 and not sure from the reviews that is that inferior to the Asus P6X58D to justify the extra £95 or so. You could use the money to beef up something else in your system.

I like it, Mmmm I like it a lot. I think that it has everything :-)

Cheers

I've done some comparing and I must say I like the new Rampage III Formula, it's like the P6X58D-E but better...?

Today 2 shops here in the netherlands gave price at around 182 pounds, dunno if that's correct, have just mailed them... :)

Didn't know that board existed. If it is indeed retailing at about the £190 mark then it would be a good choice certainly.

Edit: Only UK guestimated price I can find is in the £250 range.

I think actually one link is a rampage III gene... :o it's all messed up I'll give more information later, it says Rampage III Formula though in two shops :)

Mind if I jump onto this thread aswell as covering same kinda question :)

Have also been looking for a new board for a new system build was planning on going for Asus P6X58D-E but have heard some mixed reviews on the spacing of the gfx cards as I plan to run a xfire setup so not 100% sure how much of an issue it will be.

But in the hunt for a board have come across the new MSI X58A-GD65 features SataIII + USB3.0 aswell around the £150 mark http://eu.msi.com/index.php?func=proddesc&maincat_no=1&cat2_no=170&prod_no=2100 just wandering if anyone has seen any more info on this board or experience with MSI (All my old system have all been ASUS)

i've got the ud3r .i had the rev 1 at first but due to stupidity on my part i had to buy another one and got the rev 2 one which is more stable

Yep, the spacing isnt as good as the first generation of asus x58 boards such as the p6t series, over an inch between cards on the p6t deluxe and p6td.

Same ****ty spacing as the p6x58d, so crossfire isn't going to happen using the top two 16x slots. You'll have enough space if you use the top and bottom PCI-E slots to crossfire, though that will limit you to 16x/8x speed. According to HardOCP the performance difference should be negligible though. Also make sure you have enough airflow over them (intake fans on the side panel blowing directly over the cards helps a lot).

Cheers for that info, already have my HAF X case so airflow over the cards shouldn't be an issue wandering if its worth waiting for the Rampage III Formula which is due for release in Sept from what I've read, just need to find some exact dates and pricing presume it will have better spacing.
