I'm nearing the end of a ban for drink driving (5 months to go) and I will have to pass a DVLA medical. I'm wondering if anyone here knows or has experience of what this involves.

I found this link: http://www.drinkdriving.org/drink_driving_information_DVLA_medical.php

According to that, if you don't drink anything for 5 weeks, you should pass the test.

I am a bit confused about the test. Do you need to have quit drinking? I mean there is no law that says only teetotallers can drive, just that you need to be sober at the time you are driving.

Basically I am wondering if I need to completely abstain from all alcohol for a few months, to pass the test?

Update Dec 2010... I did the medical and got my licence back two weeks later.

So quite a bit over the limit, sorry it was a round about way of asking if you have a alcohol problem, reading it you should be fine, it looks like it's designed to wean out alcoholics

Well thats none of their business surely as long as you aint drunk while actually driving.

Nope because he didn't give a sample he's a High Risk Offender and subject to more rigourous testing before his license is returned, mainly for persitant offenders or anyone who blew large amounts over the limit

Ah i didnt know that.

Am I correct in thinking that the reason you didn't give them a sample was because you knew you were likely to be many, many times over the limit?

Try telling that to an alcoholic like DD... :)

roffle, giving up is easy if I choose to, I've done it before. I am wondering if it is necessary. As it stands, I don't know, so I am going to err on the side of caution. Due to the draconian law.

Yes, but is that relevant to the thread, or do you just want to have a go? ;)

Out of interest did it work out worse or better to not give a breath sample?

Not having a go just watching Road Wars etc... and by not blowing some people get much smaller bans/fines than I would have thought.

Probably the latter! ;)

I'm just sat here wondering if it is right to give an alcoholic advice on how to blag a medical examination to get a driving licence again...

Obviously I don't know what punishment I would have received, had I given a sample. I suspect I would have gone to prison, so compared to that, a two year ban is pretty mint :p
