Bigger screen or better quality panel?

I have been looking at getting a new 24” monitor for around £200-£250 and had narrowed it down to something like the Dell ST2410 or Samsung 2494HM but then saw a lot of recommendations for the Dell U2311H, which has an IPS panel instead of TN but is an inch smaller. Therefore I was wondering what people think is more important, the extra inch of screen size or the superior panel?

Superior panel tbh, TN panels are nice for gaming as youll be sitting directly in front off it, plus they have better response times, however an ips panel will offer better viewing angles, useful if you use the screen for movie viewing.

hmmm didn't think u could get a 27" for that sort of money, the Iiyama E2710HDSD looks very good value, can anyone report what the viewing angles are like? i like the idea of an IPS panel though as i hear the quality is noticeably better. maybe i should revise my original question, what's more important an extra 4 inches of screen size or a superior panel?!!

Having used TN panels, moved to IPS, and then back to TN (due to screen failure), I can say without a doubt that I would go for the better quality IPS panel.

TN panels are fine for horizontal viewing angles, but vertical is terrible. Especially from below. If you sit fairly close to your screen, and / or shift around a lot or slump in your chair, you will see a massive improvement from an IPS screen. Not to mention that the colour reproduction is in a different class.

Just my 2c. Quality over quantity. You can sit closer to a smaller and better-quality screen, but there's nothing you can do to overcome the drawbacks of TN.

i have a Iiyama ProLite B2712HDS (which is similar to the Iiyama E2710HDSD) it's a top quality monitor. viewing angles are very good for an TN panel, no backlight bleed. the colours are perfect as you get for an TN panel, no ghosting...

thanks for the advice everyone, think im going to go for the U2311H as although i haven't seen an IPS and TN panel side by side the general opinion seems to be that the quality of IPS is far better. i also think 27" might be a bit too big as i usually only sit a couple of feet away!

You can see the comparison videos on youtube. There is BIG difference between IPS and TN.

IPS the king!!

I would go for quality as going from a 19" tn to 24" tn has not given me the jump in qualily that i wanted. TN for me just looks washy when compared to the better pannels.

Viewing angles are fine in this monitor, I mean its tn panel, so there is a bit of colour shift, but its vastly better than the viewing angles on my asus 22" tn which it replaced. I guess the technology has improved quite a bit in the last few years.

With this iiayma Id take the extra inches any day if you are going to be gaming on it, this thing is a monster, and performs superbly.

Here are some pics of mine..

Whilst ips is undoubtedly more colour accurate, unless your working in publishing or design, then you can simply adjust the colour settings until they look right for your preference. Personaly speaking the extra cost can't be justified. Tn's especially newer ones are cheaper and better than ips for gaming. Ips is more for professional use imo.

Having owned a TN , LED TN and now IPS I would defiantly take that 23" dell over the other TN screens. You get what you pay for imo. It all depends what you out of a screen. If your a hardcore fps gamer then its a TN but for everything else I would pick the smaller but much higher quality screen.

I'm not at home at the moment but can check when I get back if I remember! my old asus 22" about the same age is bad with dark movie scenes, especially with badly encoded 700meg avi movies. This screen is much improved. Although there is still visible banding with low quality media. The source material probably plays a bigger part though... I've got a few proper 1080p films now, and they look great, I'm sure there will still be some banding, but its not as if I've recoiled at any awfully blocky dark bits yet, as I did on a frequent basis with the 22".

I'll try and get a better picture and subjectively look at some dark movie scenes at 1080p.

I agree with that to an extent, for me, movies come a close second priority to fps games, and for me the the extra screen acres versus the slower response and significant extra cost, simply isn't worth the balance.

i have always thought the same until i saw the u2311 which has decent response times and is roughly the same price as a 24-27" TN!

the screen would be used for a bit of everything really, general use/work/internet, watching movies, casual gaming, and the odd bit of amateur photoshoping, so it sounds like IPS is the way to go
