I just don’t understand why people would do something like this in this day and age. Why has the government not outlaw this archaic practice?

30% of children with rare genetic diseases in the uk are of Pakistani origin however they only makeup around 2% of the population, I am not trying to attack Pakistani people, as there are other communities that also do this.

I was about to say that people have the right to express their love for each other and that they should marry if they want to; but then the point was raised that such unions result in children with horrible and debilitating diseases, condemned to a lifetime of suffering and misery.

It's horrible that these people know what happens as a result of inbreeding but choose to go through with it anyway.

Everyone's got atleast one they would do.

Somewhat true, I have slept with my dad's cousin's daughter but people generally think 2nd cousins are a-ok

I didn't realise it was legal, however I also didn't realise that the birth defects were quite that bad! Just assumed one in a few would have some kind of minor disability.

More than half of British Pakistanis marry their first cousins

Is that actually true?! I Don't believe it, I thought it was just cultural jokes between Indians and Pakistanis which exagerated it, I can't believe it's actually that widley done!

That is such a high figure.
In the first post the Op said other communities do it too, which communities?
I know the travelling community has been assoicated with this in the past, but where else is it commonplace to marry ones cousin?

I think it happens in the Middle East and Africa also.

That is just utterly mad, surely it isnt true? I mean we are all developed people these days.. why would so many people do that?

There has never been a public health campaign to try and raise awareness because we are all afraid that we would be labelled as racists.

From what I understand, the risk increases proportionately the more generations follow the practice, so there's little risk if only one generation marry and have kids.
