As daft as it sounds I have had first hand experience of terrorizing a friend who has a fear of fruit. I think its the texture of the skin not quite sure, but he wouldn't touch it or be in the same room as a bowl of fruit

Exactly.

These people must have something wired up wrongly in their head that makes them terrified at the sight of certain items.

Its easy to believe they are faking it but I wouldn't be so sure.
