Im planning on buying a couple of 460's as a shorterm solution, Im talking 6 months or so, then selling them on.
I wondering what are the best brands when it comes to reselling them on for an upgrade at a later stage, Im going for the 1024MB versions as I think they will hold their value better, but which brand? Usually I would have thought EVGA as they have lifetime warranties, but I see that has been scrapped and they are only offering 2yrs now, so if you saw 2nd hand 460's in MM, which manufacturer would you prefer?
Normally I buy OCUK value as I have never had a bad experience, but I normally buy for 2 yrs, so this is a bit different..

lol - typically at the top end of the price range, I s'pose the more expensive ones hold their value better then?
I ask because the resale value of the 480's has crashed through the floor, £420 cards going for £300 3 months later

Well to be fair you're not going to be able to hold a large percentage of the value for re-sale due to the nature of computer parts. Personally, just buy what's cheapest and don't worry about resale.

Having the boxes/receipt/warranty will command a higher price than a bare card though as well.

edgemon buying a gfx card as some kind of holding investment is always a bad idea...

do you really need 2 of them? that will double your loss instantly.

Not really a holding investment, just a temporary fix to a problem I have - I completely understand the losing money bit, Im just thinking ahead to try and minimise my losses.

Will make sure I keep everything as new, I was just wondering if some brands held their value better - their resale value will also depend on what cards are around at the time as well, I remember the 9800GX2's held their value for what seemed like ages
Zotac have a 5yr warranty - might go for that...

probably like me other people see a video card as a high risk item to fail,

even though I can buy it from you and probably rma it I'm not going to pay you 350 for something I can buy new for £420...

Tbh, when ATI comes out with their new cards in Q4, many cards will go down in price. Imagine 5850s being sold on for £170-180. These cards are bound to push 460s down to £150 at least. Resale value will suffer even more, I'd say £130 for the cards will be optimistic. Now assuming you're purchasing from here, you're looking at £110 loss in 6 months in total. Sure, my figures may be incorrect but it's not a good investment at all IMO.

why have two people mentioned investment when the OP hasn't, except in response to say its not an investment.

When it comes to second hand, people don't pay for fancy features.

If say a card thats £100 more than normal with a waterblock on it, when it comes to 2nd hand that waterblock will add £10 to the price, because end of the day when you sell a say 280gtx with waterblock on it when the 480gtx/5870 are out, its obsoleted and its only worth as much as any standard 280gtx pretty much.

So buy the cheapest 460gtx possible pretty much.

If in 6 months a 460gtx is going second hand for £120, you'll probably get the same £120 for a ocuk oem type one that cost £160, as a uber overclocked stupidly named big brand one that cost you £200.

The only thing to think about, and I'm not quite sure what the deal is with various 460gtx's, is overclocking, if the MSI cooling allows an extra 100Mhz core overclock it probably will be worth more, but if it only gives the same overclocks, just a bit quieter or cooler, most people won't care.

The ocuk one, or the Palit one would be the ones to go for, it might even be worth spending £5 more on the 800Mhz overclocked palit.

See thats all overclocking is worth in general I've never once seen a preoverclocked card that came close to the real limits, you're mostly talking 25-50Mhz extra, 100Mhz extra is a fairly big bump, on top end cards with stupid marketing you'd maybe be paying an extra £80-100 which is nuts as basically every core around will do the same overclocks.

£5 extra for a little convinience(not having to use something to overclock automatically) and for the certainty of a not far off 15% overclock isn't actually bad value at all.

id say anything you buy to sell, is an investment of sorts. what he wants to do is invest his money in something that brings the least loss at the end of the 6 months, thats pretty obvious from his post.

i doubt that, the gap will shorten but you will still get £10-20 more for a great branded one as opposed to say a boggo palit.

the gigabyte and asus are so cheap it would be rude not to. except the giga aint the best for SLi/

Best GTX 460 resale advice from someone who swaps out graphics cards all the time - This one, at least at its current price:

http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=GX-236-AS&groupid=701&catid=56&subcat=1830

The lower the price you initially pay, the less you lose when selling them, simple :)

Good point - though I think that one is a triple slot one? If it is then two won't fit in my case for SLI. If it is a double slot, then I will get it..

I completely expect to lose money, Im just trying to lose the least, so if not the Asus, I will probably go for the OCUK value as they have always done well - in another rig I have a value 470 @ 800 which Im well chuffed with
