In response to the biggest let-down thread, we all now know which games to avoid, but I thought since there's no shortage of game-bashing in here, what games did you buy thinking it might be rubbish, or just because it was cheap, only to find it was a diamond in the rough?

For me, it has to be Motorm4x offroad "extreme" Bought it because it was cheap, it turned out to be something completely different to what I had expected and really engaged me. Equally, plants vs zombies stole hours of my life after I picked it up for a quid because I'd heard of it.

So what games did the same for you? Hopefully we'll have a list of cheap/awesome/different games at the end that we can browse!

plants vs zombies also did it for me. Got recommended by a friend and a few days later emerged to say to him I enjoyed playing through the game

James Pond 2 for the megadrive

Bought it on a whim because I liked how the box looked, turned out to be the best 2D platformer ive ever played.

Evil Genius.

Didn't know anything about it other than a friend had it and said it was ok. I picked it up second hand from Amazon for £2~3 a few years back.

Spent hours and hours playing it :) was very enjoyable. making traps and upgrading to laser fences and fire pits, hahaha brings back memories.

Definitely PvZ. best fiver I've spent, for both me and the missus!

Machinarium was surprisingly good.. It's short and quaint, but the art direction is simply astounding :)

Nexus: The Jupiter Incident.

I'd never even heard of it, i was just desperate for a space RTS after the death of the Homeworld franchise so took a chance. Turned out to be one of the most enjoyable and memorable gaming experiences i've ever had.

Vampire The Masquerade: Bloodlines. The reviews were of a broken mess and I got it for a tenner in a bargain bin (only a month or two after release). I started playing at patch 1.2 (which wasn't reviewed).

What can I say? My joint favourite PC Game with Deus Ex and more similar to it than any other game I've played. Sheer brilliance.

Starcraft 2.

Not a massive fan of RTS games, so joined the Hype-Wagon and bought it, never played the original SC, so thought it might be a flop, turns out to be the best game i have ever had the pleasure of playing!!

Jericho is the only one recently (played this on the xbox mind you). It got resolutely mediocre reviews everywhere, but I absolutely loved the atmosphere, firefights and possession mechanic.

My vote ..

'Doom'.

I just didn't know computers were capable of such total and utter awesomeness, didn't have my own PC at the time, and had heard no hype. Just saw on uni computer, and 'OMG'!

Another vote for Plants v Zombies.

Thought it might burn a couple of hours when I was bored one day. Paid less than a fiver for it. 23 hours played and I know I will get to 50 before getting bored. The great thing about it is I can leave it for a few weeks and then have a game, only to realise 3 hours have dissapeared. :)

Portal.

Bought the Orange box for Half Life 2 and the episodes and didn't know anything about Portal or Team Fortress 2 at the time.

+1 :D

Telephone Aquatuning UK .. they never answer but the voice recorder is the female robot voice ... totally awesome

****EDIT****

The cake IS a Lie !!!

Plants vs Zombies - who knew that would be as much fun as it was.

Portal - picked it up for £3 on steam and absolutely loved it.

Oblivion - I know it gets a lot of hate from RPG fans, but I had never really ever played RPGs until Oblivion. I was blown away by how awesome it was. For something I picked up thinking "might be ok, got some good reviews" to turn into possibly my favourite game of all time puts it on this list for me.
