Your most surprisingly awesome game ever!

Siphon Filter for me (though think this was Playstation only so out of place here) - really got into that game and played it constantly, really consumed me at the time and could play it for hours!

PC wise I would probably have to say Peggle, saw some people playing it on my steam friends list, bought it for a few quid on steam for a rainy day and got hooked on it completely

Live For Speed < Which is a racing simulator game, Physics are really precise, And unlike arcade games you learn how to actually drive properly and race and car controll and iv now been playing it since 2005 and im considerd one of the best on the game, got lots of world records on it. :)

NOLF2
Had heard nothing about it, picked it up for a tenner and to this day its still my favourite FPS. Any game where you get to shoot french mime artists with darts would get my vote, but the fact that its packed with genuinely funny humour and some solid FPS action makes it an utter classic for me.

Oh god, how could I have forgotten this little gem of a game. Yes NOLF 2 and Machinarium get my vote.

Not necessarily of all-time but off the top of my head:

Risen - Having never played any of the Gothic games before and hearing nothing of this until I accidentally stumbled upon it, I actually expected to try it and find myself not liking it with an uninstall to follow 20 minutes later. Instead, the opening area left an incredibly good impression on me and I loved every bit of it...except the bloody ending!

Another World – Its an Amiga game, well it was at the time but its been ported to just about every single system since. I looked at the back of the box in a computer store and thought, nah it looks naff. I purchased it anyway as it came highly recommended. Fantastic game it was too. Totally un-expected.

Doom – A shareware game that was actually worth buying..!! Quite un-expected…

Tie fighter – I hadn’t read a single review, didn’t even know it was being developed. Must’ve been in a cave, but I picked it up, as it had the star wars logo on the box. I’d not really like X Wing too much, but this was so much better…. Finest space combat game ever played to date, sadly might be the only one now. Space combat games are now rarely developed.

Tomb Raider – game for me just came out of nowhere. I played it using a 3Dfx patch and it was amazing.

Toca Touring Cars – I didn’t expect much from the company that’d brought us all Micro Machines, a top down table top racer. They got this one right, full British touring car racing game.

Full Throttle – To behonest, Lucas Arts were known for giving a really good, epic graphic adventure, but they were long and drawn out at times. This was just so fresh, I expected more day of the tentacle. Instead I got an interactive movie.. Fab stuff.

Prince of Persia sands of time – Talk about a fantastic reboot of the series. I plucked this one out of a bargain bin, good buy it was too.

Rome total war – Normally these types of games are boring, too hard or I just don’t get into them… this was fantastic, I always loved when I went into battle and it said “strength and honour”… Felt like I was playing the opening scene to Gladiator each time…..

Batman Arkham – I honestly didn’t expect anything from this title. Nearly all batman games before it were either just some type of final fight bet em up (SNES batman games) or all the rest were total garbage. This was amazing, expected so little and got so much in return.

Silent Hunter III – Nothing had ever come close to a subsim like Silent Service II on the Amiga. I tried the previous Silent Hunter games, but this was just everything I wanted and very nearly didn’t bother with it.

Orange Box. Hadnt a clue what Tf2 was before I got it and it was fantastic, dont play it anymore tho, changed far too much and I couldnt keep up. (+ portal was great!)

Civ 4 plus its expansions, got them for ~£10 on steam not having a clue what it was but thought I'd give it a go. insanely addictive, very confusing, huge depth and many hours of my life lost.

Batman Arkham Asylum, thought it was going to be pants but it was amazing, the graphics were incredible and the story was fantastic

Day of the tentacle, I dont even know why I bought this, bought it along with Doom on the spur of the moment and loved it

I cant remember the name of it and i'm racking my brain to think but there was a horror sort of game from a few years ago that was waves and waves of enemies coming at you and you had all sorts of weapons and there were end of level bosses, what the hell was it called!??? It was great fun!

Deus Ex was purchased on a whim, very glad I did, one of the only games I purchased as new.

One game that really surprised me was Rogue Trooper. Excellent game, definitely one to play.

Armed and Dangerous, thought it sound a bit pants but I must say I don't think I've ever laughed so hard at anything, ever!!

Has to be Mafia 1, nothing beats the memory of it, completely unexpected, just bought it one day randomly a few months after release and it still sits in my mind as one of the best games I have ever played, its always been in my top 3 of all time.

Baldurs Gate II, bought it as one of my very first pc games and didn't really have a clue what it was all about but it took up many many hours of my life.

Fallout 1 would be first most awesomest.

Deus Ex 1 would be second most awesomest.

Mafia would be third most awesomest.

Runner ups: Fallout 2, Fallout 3, Gothic series, Risen, Vampire Bloodlines, Witcher, Mafia 2

Dead Space

Not normally into survival/horror games at all. Got this on 360 at a whim and it's just brilliant from start to finish.
