Watch Buffs Required

I've had a pretty good year at work so thought I'd treat myself to a new watch.

I've got to admit that outside of the standard Rolex's and Omega's I don't really know what the good brands are. Anyway...

Having mooched around a few shops looking for something I stumbled upon a watch I really like the look of.

Panerai Luminor GMT PAM 088

http://www.paneraisource.com/watch_details/Contemporary_31.html

The best price they would do is 4000 quid.

So...

Is this a fair price?

Will this watch hold it's value if I look after it?

if you want an investment, buy something else like a flat, if you want a designer watch then go for it. make sure you get it insured though, i broke my rado and had to pay over £100 to get it fixed by their service centre. it was then that i realised that i should just buy fakes in future, if you are rich nobody will think or know its a fake and it does the exact same thing, the only person that will know is you.

Many fakes are of better quality than Rado, so sounds like a good plan in that case.

No reason ever to buy fakes, you can buy brilliant quality originals at every budget from £10 - £100,000+ so why buy a cheesy wannabee fake.

theres a nice cartier watch at over £10K or i could buy the fake and everybody i know will assume its real, so whats the point in me buying the real one?

i have a real rado and breitling, but i have been put off buying originals, its just an accessory and nobody can tell the difference between decent fakes and originals. its not like the 90's where a fake tag heur would disintegrate as as soon as you looked at it, fakes are now just as good as the originals.

There are some very good fakes. It is particularly easy to do good fakes of the watches which use ebauche eta movemets (like breitlings and other watch companies which are basically in the business casing watches and marketing).

However, I like to feel good about myself and not like a fraud. I would rather pick a watch at the budget I wanted to spend that would reward its designer rather than line the pockets of criminals. I would much rather have a good £100 orient or seiko for example (or moreover one of the watches I make for myself) than a £100 good quality fake.

I really struggle to understand the mentality of people who would feel good about wearing a fake. Just get a seiko and be done with it.

I dont care who i reward, but i stopped buying things for other peoples benefit a long time ago.

Who wants a snide watch, you know its snide thats the main problem, if you have no money buy a Swatch.

With companies like Christopher Ward about theres no excuses for snide watches in my opinion.

you dont understand the mentality of a trade worth billions every year?

women like chanel handbags, they cost over £1k.

you can get a fake for £75, go figure.

seriously your deluded if you think you should only every buy an original.

if your the only one that knows then there is no problem, unless you need to boost your ego, which therefore means you are insecure about yourself and are unhappy about yourself.

you should take a look at Fishbein's "theory of reasoned action", its a good read and related to this subject, also Maslow's "hierarchy of needs" is also related slightly.

I said I didn't understand the mentality of people who feel the need to wear fakes not that I did not understand the scale of that industry, or those who profit from it. Way to misread.

My point is that there are always alternatives (and yes it goes for handbags since you seem interested in them) which are good quality, well designed and at the price point you are comfortable with.

You enjoy your market tat though.

no ego boosting for me, I am saying don't be driven by the brand and the image, buy something genuine and honest that you can afford

i suppose millions who buy fakes every year also have the wrong end of the stick?

i also own a real rado and a real breitling, so go figure.

Go figure what? That you sometimes buy snide watches, well thats nice.

its been written about by theorists for centuries, ill take their word over yours. like i said go read about it.

Im not interested in reading it, i am however interested in people that feel the need to buy snide watches, which is what we are talking about.

You could try these people for a Panerai - either new or used.

http://www.watchfinder.co.uk/Panerai-Watches.aspx

I like some of the Panerai range but went for an IWC Aquatimer when I had a recent splurge, with a Wempe dress watch for when the IWC is too chunky.

There are loads of really nice watches out there, and you really have to try them on before you decide what's right for you.

I love aquatimers - which did you go for? last range with the internal bezel or the new ones?

I still prefer the internal ones but the new one has grown on me a lot (kind of like facelift cars you need to see them for a bit before you get to love them).
