I know we recently had a "post things that really annoy you" thread, but this is something I've seen a *lot* of over the last few days. People who signal one way, and then turn the other. I've seen cars do it at junctions, I've seen coaches indicate right to turn right, and then pull it and stop at the side of the road.

I'm at a complete loss as to how someone can indicate the *wrong way*. My driving experience is not extensive, but every car I've driven has had fairly different distinct actions for turning left vs right.

I'm slightly worried as I spend most of my time on a motorbike, and am now slightly paranoid about filtering past anyone who's signalling at all, just in case they're being a muppet.

Are people just stupid? Or are there cars / coaches / lorries where the controls make it easy to get it wrong?

Grrrrr. :(

Your not the only one. Lately around my end, people have been indicating one way then going they way.

One good example. I'm making my way from tesco to home. Im on the right hand lane. Fiest is on the Bus lane.
Only to relise (Fiest) that its a bus lane. After driving in that lane about a mile, the lady decides to indicate LEFT

But moves into the RIGHT lane where she almost had an accident with me......

Bloody womens....

As a biker you should know better than to trust any cage to do what it appears to be doing until after it's done it. Even then they might just be lulling you into a false sense of security ;)
Simple rule is to not trust indicators and always expect to be surprised. You might live as long as I have but with less of the aching parts if you do :P

On a similar note it's annoying as hell when people park up and stick their hazards on when between cars so you can only see the indicators on one side which is a mite distracting and even annoying when someone attempts to let them pull out when they have no intention of moving :(

Some vauxhalls have stupid indicators, think they have stopped making cars with a different way to indicate/cancel indication now!

Ive only ever had one car accident in my 15 years of driving and that was caused by a stupid woman who indicated left and then proceeded to do a right turn u-turn right in front of me. Im sure you can guess I wasnt too please.

Sometimes you see big lorries indicate right before a left hand turn because they need to move across to the wrong side of the road to make the turn - this I can understand and think its actually a good thing (you see it a lot in the blackwall tunnel).

People indicate the wrong way on roundabouts all the time and it does my head in. People that can't grasp that indicating right while exiting the roundabout is misleading and stupidly annoying should be punished by way of castration.

I do that quite often if I've gone right around a roundabout and am in the correct lane to be exiting.

I'm learning not to trust anything at all, and make zero assumptions about what's going on, regardless of indicators etc. But it's a pain in the arse when 99% of drivers understand how to operate their vehicles, and yet the other 1% are still legally allowed out on the roads.

I can understand people not doing it right on roundabouts, but that's because they've made a concious decision to do something that's incorrect.

I just don't understand who think "Ok, I'm going right. Lets indicate left."

A Business post driver I know got wiped out by some clown in a landrover indicating one way then turning the other a couple of days ago.

Guy swore blind he he was indicating the right way, despite being shown the mobile phone evidence that had just been taken by the Business post driver of the landrover enbedded in the near side of the Business post lorry with the left hand indicator merrily flashing away.

Good.

A flashing indicator means one thing, the indicator is flashing. Sod all else.

Assume everybody is a cretin as a matter of routine. ;)

Highway code advises NOT to pass a vehicle that appears to be indicating erroneously.

And I agree with the highway code.

My point is that it's usually not clear it's erroneous until the driver makes the manoeuvre. A car that's approaching a left hand turn, slowing down, indicating left and moving to the left might lead the unsuspecting road user into thinking he's actually going to turn left. Whilst it would usually be safe to filter past on the right (if there's room), there's no accounting for idiots.

I see your point - but fundamentally disagree. An indicator means jack. Do not trust or take an indicator as anything other than some random flashing light that means nothing.

indicating left and moving to the left might lead the unsuspecting road user
Step 1: Stop being an unsuspecting road user.

Whilst it would usually be safe to filter past on the right
As a result of the indication? No. Only when the manoeuvre has started, would it then be 'safe' to pass. Not when there is an indication alone.

Look at it this way, if there was no indication, would it be safe to pass? If not then it's not safe when there is an indication.
