The whole HD 5000 series will be replaced in a few months time :)

AMD recently revealed bits on its coming graphics architecture and after some digging we found information about what circuits will appear in 2010, and that includes Antilles sporting dual GPUs; to be known as Radeon HD 6970.

According to reliable sources, the Radeon HD 6000 family will consist of three different series; Antilles, Caymen and Barts. Where the last one will be the first one out.

Barts will replace AMD Juniper in the mid-range segment and most likely be named Radeon HD 6700 series. The launch is scheduled for October 2010. The code-name most likely comes from Saint-Barthélemy (Saint Barts), which is a Frech island in the Caribbean. On a side note, Saint Barts was a Swedish colony between 1784-1878, which can be seen on the island shield with its three crowns.

Caymen will replace Cypress and take over in the performance segment from Radeon HD 5870, 5850 and 5830. Exactly what models that will launch is uncertain, but the cards are expected to reach stores in November 2010 in the form of the Radeon HD 6800 series. Catalyst 10.8 lists 14 different Cayman models (more on that later). The GL models are a bit illusive at the moment, but could very well just be the FireGL versions of AMD's professional family. The Cayman Islands can also be found in the Caribbean, Weest Indies and have been named after the native tounge for alligator (caiman).

Antilles sports graphics circuits of the Caymen series, but as the successor to Hemlock it uses two of these with each card. This dual-GPU card looks to launch in two versions, like much Radeon HD 4850 X2 and 4870 X2. If there is any room for the entry level model of Antilles is hard to say, but in December 2010 we can expect the first Antilles models in stores. Antilles is named after the islands with the same name, a group of islands divided into two groups; Greater Antilles and Lesser Antilles.

Always exciting to see a new gen but I do wonder what kind of improvement these can put out over 5xxx as it's using the same 40nm process.

If a 6870 launches at the same speed or fractionally faster than a 480 for ~£350 there doesnt seem much point.

£350 and 10% faster than a 480 then it starts to look viable as long as it has a stronger tesseleation unit than 5870 as well.

gonna give this one a miss i feel, hopefully the 7*** series will have eyefinity working amazingly (as well as multi gpu performance ;) )

What is wrong with ATi multi GPU performance exactly? I've had a 4870x2, 2 4890s and 2 5850s in the past. All performed great and I don't recall any major Crossfire issues.

And I'm far from being an ATi fanboy, I have a definite preference for nVidia (mainly because of the NCP) and am currently running 2 GTX 480s in SLi.

From spending far too much time reading forums like this my impression is ATI has more multi GPU issues than Nvidia.

Most issues come from unaware users or more than dual-card setup owners.

Not sure, I thought part of the Si architecture was revamped tessellation capability

Dunno how they implement it, hopefully it won't cause any major performance issues. I bet it will be just fine as the current series is (meaning it will step forward in the right direction).

i'll see what the 5870 replacement is like as the old 4870x2 is starting to feel a little slow and the upgrade pixies have been whispering in my ear

On my ATI crossfire setups, oftentimes the drivers didnt work or allow crossfire to activate, and it took much fiddling and reinstalling to get it to work.

Also, my GTX 460 SLI has far better scaling than any of ATIs crossfire setups do. I used to thing crossfire scaling was great, but the GTX 460 SLI scales even better!

Oh right, proper hard facts then
Do you have any experience with x-fire?

My gigabyte cards needed a new bios from gigabytes website to get crossfire working, though that was probably their fault and not ATIs.

Someone found this wall of text in the new 10.8 catalyst drivers:

I have no idea what that means, anyone want to try and figure it out for me? :p

I think the first bit is just an ID for the drivers, the second bit is the code name and hardware ID for the chip, and the last part is just the series the card is from.

For example:

233,CAYMAN XT (6718),NI CAYMAN

Might be a 6870 or something. I think where 'GL' is included it might be a FirePro card, also.
