Okay so im doing a comp science degree starting next month and have decided to get a PC that will be able to take all the latest content for the next 4 years and run it comfortably, This is just because when i start i will only have student pocket money to live off which means no chance of any upgrades :)

Tell me what you think on what i got there, the 3 screens is not for gaming or anything its just because its how im used to working when using multiple apps etc so im not to fused about them being good for eyefinity. I already own the GPU i guess i shoould add. Anyway let me know what u think guys ur advice / opinions will be very helpful. Im not going to bother upgrading the case as i already have a Antec 902.

Looks good. The only thing I think that's overkill is the PSU you could easily get away with a 750W.

Ah right see this is what i was not sure on myself, i suppose i just thought the 5970 + an i7 might need a lot of juice, in which case i dont need to upgrade from my current 750W psu i guess! :)

Its a tough question to ask without being able to tell the future but do you think it will cope in 4 years time at that specc? + thanks for the fast replys.

under full load, the i7 and 5970 would prolly go upto about 700w
but most of the time u'll never be at full load

a 750 would be fine.

weather it'll last 4 years depends really
theres nothing u can buy now that will last longer really.

the main thing that wont last 4 years is if you want to play the latest demanding games at high res, but thats always the case really.

top end GPU's tend to be able to run most games at high settings for about 2 years, sometimes more.

cant see games needing the full power of an i7 for a long time thou.
and most other software will run fine on it

Yeah i guess, I suppose there will be enough if needed that i could sell my card if it really mattered that much and be able to afford something at the top end in a few years time.

Thanks again for the advice.

Your going to spend £1,952.06 on a computer and live of pot noodles!

Is there any chance that three 24" monitors and a graphics card for £1001.71 is a tad excessive! :D

haha, the reason for the screens is because i get way to frustrated not being able to work with everything i might need open at full view, especially when i have deadlines the next day and pages of work to do! :)

Besides if i can get a decent picture of a pot noodle and put it on all screens, i might be able to stare at it long enough to believe i have actually eaten one and then i wont need to spend anything on food!

change sapphire to corsair, for the PSU (750HX). and i would save £30 and go for the 930 and OC it, or let it just use turbo.

forget the reapers, and go for the ripjaw Gskill sets, saves you over £50 aswell. PS you could use that saved money and go for a 128GB SSD :) more space for games.

Chay525, in terms of reasoning or "justification" that has got to be the poorest attempt I've ever heard in my life! :D

Enjoy being young, takes years to understand the difference between "need" and "want" hehe!

Heh, i tried to make it sound reasonable but even now i can see it just failed!

Thanks for the adivce, I have dumped the 64gb SSD for a 128GB one now anyway just because i realised i have almost 100gb of games anyway :) . About the ram switch, would there be any noticible difference between the G.skill @ 16000 compared to the OCZ @ 20000?

honestly, no, after about 1333 there isnt much difference (1-2%) and even before that its only about 5-10% performance difference, in certain tests. really ram speed means practically nothing in terms of performance. not much in this day and age is limited by ram speeds.

128GB for games only, what you allmost have 100GB of games, man if i were you, i would get a 64GB aswell (and make that just for the OS).

for the C300, to get the best out of them, i would always use the Highpoint Rocket 620, sata 6GB card. onboad sata 6GBs is a bit poo really.

You're never gonna need a rig that powerful for a uni degree. Save some money so you aren't skint for the entire year. How you gonna fit 3 monitors in your tiny room? As you are probably in halls first year, atleast the power bills are already paid!!

Get this - http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=HD-057-OC&groupid=701&catid=14&subcat=910 :p Instead of a 128GB Crucial.

The 128 GB has the worst read/write speeds out of all the C300s. Or if you really need 128GB get 2 64s in RAID 0, yum!

Also is 640GB enough for a storage drive?

ETA: Don't listen to any of the naysayers about saving money. In my first year I bought a ps3, a 40" TV and a business laptop - which all came to about £2k. That looks like a perfect setup, then when you move out of halls and into a house with wifi just buy a cheap CULV laptop for browsing in the lounge with the 4 blonde sweedish female housemates you would have aquired. :p

ETAA: Pics of my setup while I was in halls - the webcam is only there for the lulz
