A friend of mine was on holiday and was bitten by one of these - Southern Black Widow Spider

Thankfully, he was fine and the doctors sorted him out, but blimey, the damage such a small thing can do! Some of the more common symptoms that happen if you are bitten -

Latrodectism -

  • Severe pain in muscle groups local to the bite.
  • Muscle cramping, primarily in the abdomen, back and thighs.
  • Headache, dizziness, tremors, salivation, diaphoresis (excessive sweating), nausea and vomiting.
  • Anxiety, fatigue, insomnia.
  • Lacrimation (tearing of the eyes).
  • Migratory arthralgia (joint pain).
  • Tachycardia (rapid heart beat), bradycardia (very slow heart beat), restlessness, hypertension (elevated blood pressure), Tachypnea (hyperventilation).
If you are unlucky, it can turn very bad, very fast -

In some rare and extreme cases, severe complications can arise:

  • Spontaneous abortion, preterm labor
  • Priapism
  • Acute renal failure (failing of kidney function).
  • Myocarditis, rhabdomyolysis, paralysis.
  • Shock, coma, and death.
^ One of the above list is a link, sounds particularly nasty and I had never heard of it!

Which brings me back to my question, have any members on here had any bad encounters with exotic dangerous spiders?

I'm not afraid of the generic house spiders we have over here (like many people are :p), but my attitude would rapidly change if I was in a country with things like the above in!

Never a spider but I am suffering a hangover that has most of these simptoms.... Maybe I was bitten by a spider last night?

I had a severe allergic reaction to a new course of medication (gold injections) that gave me a nice couple of days with all of those symptoms except the eye tearing (wtf is that?!)

I had a full-body rash too.

One of my mates over here got bitten by a white tail on his hip.

Most of his hip turned black and it was extremely painful for him to walk for a few weeks.

Then he manned up and got on with his life.

I was in Thailand for a month, we dug up a few Tarantulas (there were hundreds if you know where to look), Golden Orb Spiders in the trees, Scorpions, but the only thing that posed any danger to me was the big snake I nearly stood on...

when i was in Kampot Cambodia, we took a day trip to an abandoned town a the top of a mountain. This involved sitting in the back of a pick up truck, racing up the side of a mountain in the middle of a jungle.

Anyway, halfway up, i feel a tickle in my loins. and I think, "ohh that quite nice".
When i look down i see the biggest spider I've sever seen in my life. I Literally jumped in the the lap of a huge Aussie guy at opposite, and we made his G/f get the spider out of the back with a water bottle. (all of this which doing 40 mph up the mountain.)

anyway we made the driver stop because i was white as a sheet, and convinced the spider had take a chomp out of my nut sack.

The driver merely rolled his eyes, and said "there are no poisonous spiders in Kampuchea"

felt a bit daft after that. I did feel vindicated though coz the Aussie guy was just as scared as I was

I got bitten on a day trip once at college. At first I felt fine, thought it was just a scratch or something. However, by the time I got home I was really starting to feel bad, developing a fever and so I just collapsed on my bed as soon as I got into my room.

I was totally out of it until the next morning when I woke up feeling much better, however my vision was really blurry. I then realised that this was because my eyesight had improved and I no longer needed to wear my glasses. Then I started noticing some other really strange changes. I suddenly had the body of a top form athlete and strangest of all I could shoot this weird web-like stuff from my wrists. And from then on my life was never the same again....

PK!

I got bitten in Bangkok - ankle doubled in size and went a horrible shade of red - to this day I still don't know if it was due to poison, infection or allergy, but it was thoroughly unpleasant to look at and made sleeping an absolute nightmare. I also had to get an injection in my nether region - the most embarrassing part of which was dropping trou and realising the door to the waiting room was open and loads of patients waiting to be seen were seeing something that cannot be unseen :D
