Ok I have decided about going for a 42inch TV. The main use will be gaming with the odd HD movie/Bluray. I'm quiet a competitive gamer and normally end up doing clan matches so ideally something good for gaming

Budget up to £1,400 ish.

Thanks :)

Ideally LCD/LED

If you want to get the best, the panasonic txp42v20 is very good, the black levels are fantastic, and i think out of the box, avforums gave it reference levels of quality.

or you could wait a little if you fancy 3D for some new models from Pan to come out.

Plamsa is definatly the way to go for gaming though.,

How you figure that one out? There's the large issue of image retention with plasma, hence why i'm not buying one for gaming.

I wouldn't say there's a large issue at all.....I've used my old G10 for multiple hour gaming sessions on my xbox and it's fine. As long as you don't leave the same thing stuck on the screen all day you'll be fine.

Which is why I have decided against plasma considering i play lots of racing games and a lots of fps which have speed gauges and ammo HUD's etc on screen all the time.

Never had problems with my Panny G10 regarding image retention. I've played BC2 for hours upon end with HUDs onscreen with no problems.

from another thread regarding a 50" plasma

i'm currently looking at the LG 50PK350, i just worry about IR/burn having not owned a plasma before as i do a lot of long gaming stints...

Its not the screen for you then, i got 2x PK590's on release day and the 360 IR can get quite bad, for example after 30 mins of GTA4 you will see the radar border being held on the screen.

and its not an old one

For £1400 you can most definitely look towards the 50" V20 and you wouldn't be disappointed I can assure you!

IR hasn't been an issue for my 50V20 when gaming on it for hours - just need to make sure if you pause the game for any length of time that you turn off the TV or else chance channel.

I do vary rarely see some IR when doing system updates but that's understandable as the screen stays the same for 10 mins or so sometimes but a quick change of channel and the problem is gone - it really doesn't last long at all :)

The LGs suffer considerably worse than the Panasonics when it comes to retention - with the latter there's very little to worry about (just don't go on holiday with Street Fighter paused ;)). Phosphor lag, however, does bug me. Then again, plasmas handle motion much better than the best lcd/led panels and are better for input lag. Pick your poison.

I'd go for a Panasonic plasma simply becausde for everything else - movies/tv - it wipes the floor with lcd and because I like fps and can't be putting up with motion smear.

I've got a Panasonic 42PX80 plasma which is 2+ years old. Even a the time Panasonic said image burn was a non issue - at worst you'd have a very slight image retention until a new image was displayed/refreshed, but I never witnessed this.

My TV has mainly been used for Sky and gaming, with my mates regularly using it for 4+ hour COD sessions with no image retention issues.

Compared to LCD, plasmas have a much lower response time, hence why they're usually recommended for gaming.

Cool mate, thank you :)

Phosphor lag - keep hearing this. Can you describe this at all?

I've noticed some phosphor trails when white text is on screen (subtitles etc) and there are fast pans taking place - only really seen this when playing Just Cause 2 and you get a yellowy tinge to the text but it's generally not that prevalent and I've happily played games for hours without issue.

my kids have been known to play lego star wars or lego harry potter on my 360 for hours and never seen a sniff of IR at all on my Panny Plasma. As long as you're not a total idiot then you'll never notice anything.

Just another reply to say i never have image retention problems playing on my G10 plasma, it been running for a few hours at a time with hud's on and its always clear after words.

The V20 is a lovely telly, great blacks, and the silver finish it comes in is much better than black.

This video show phosphor lag, tbh i havent noticed it myself while gaming.

Thank you guys. The guy in Curreys didn't know what TV I was talking about and he checked the local area and there were non in stock anywhere and it was an order in only jobby.

Is the v20 old?

The V20 isn't old (it came out in June I think), but it is a Plasma TV (rather than LCD/LED) which reduces its appeal to mass market and it is £1k, which again reduces its appeal. I would have thought that they don't sell too many of them so don't keep them in stock.

If you want to see one in the flesh you should try going to a more specialised store - try looking at the panasonic store locator on their website. Nothing to stop you ordering it online to save money.
