Overclocking OCuK GTX 460 768 Card.

Hi Chaps,

I recently got the OCuK Value GTX460 768 Card. I've researched that this type of card overclocks very well, so I am thinking of giving it a try. Some sites report upto a 22% increase in performance when overclocked, and I'd like to see something like that on my card without destroying it. So, rather than dable in the world of the unknown, I think it's much safer to ask here first. Therefore, here I am looking for advice, guides, and general help i.e. software needed, etc. Any help would be greatly appriciated.

Cheers,

Steve.

EDIT: Been looking at this overclocking guide, but reluctant to use it as I am not sure how the OCuK GTX 460 768 Card differs from the GTX 460 Cyclone Card.

just get MSi Afterburner, load it up and it'll allow you to adjust clocks.

if you dont touch the voltage, the chance of breaking the card is very low, most likly the pc will just crash and have to reboot.

just increase the core clock, and test it, if its working fine, try to increase it some more, etc

Ok'doki, have downloaded MSi Afterburner, going to have a very light play about with it.

EDIT: What sort of temperature is the max I can go while staying in a safe zone?

i dont like to got above 90c.

i dont know about your card but the gtx480 is 105c max so your should be around that.

my 9800gtx+ would get to around 90c and thats quite an old card now

usually the cards can take upto 110C without too much problem.

however, < 90 is a good temp to aim for.

the 460's are cooler than the 470/480's thou, so u shouldn't have much problem.

just run a few benchmarks/games to see if the overclock is stable. if not u'll either get artifacts, or u could get crashes, if you do, just reduce the clock abit

u can go upto 1.087, but u prolly wont need to go that high.

just watch the temps, increasing the voltage means higher temps.

u only need to increase the voltage if u cant get the card stable at the speed you want.

Ok, I ran the Afterburn stability test (the big donut) and the results were as follows:

Core Voltage: 1087Mv
Core Clock: 870Mhz
Shader Clock: 1740Mhz
Memory Clock: 2054Mhz
Fan Speed: Auto - 40%

Max Temp - 71
Average Temp - 70

How should I best proceed? :)

thats a pretty nice clock to start with.

have u tested it ?

u can get some proper GPU stability tests, or just use some benchmarks, like heaven and 3d mark.

if it runs through them fine without artifacting, then it will prolly be stable enough to game on

yea try some games and see if you spot any graphical errors, if you do then you need to click the card back a bit.

becareful you dont push the memory to far or you could ruin it.

I'll download 3dmark now, also going to give Metro 2033 a go on 19xx by 12xx on high detail and see how that goes, ill post the info up :) Want to try and tweak the card as much as possible, just hoping it is stable with these settings after testing. Curious to know what these type of cards can go up to, surely it can't be much more than 870?

EDIT: Yup, not going to make any more changes without consulting here first, seems as if the settings do work, then I have got extremely lucky (for once lol).

well every card is different, so they will handle different speeds, but some have got to 900.

just go through various checks for stability and checking the temp under load, and u should be fine

Not had chance to test mine yet :(

To hit 900 or a little more do you need special water cooling, or something else? Scraping the barrel and would love to hit 900 lol, but first things first, need to test the 870!

i guess it depends on your cards cooling.

on my gigabyte 460 1gb i can do 715>800 with no voltage adjustment and my temp rises from roughly 62c > 65c

i need a voltage bump to get 810mhz though which raised my temps a further 1-2c.

max gpu temp is aparently 104c and i'd imagine any card capable of 900 without artifacting wouldnt hit more than 80c

if your temps get a lil to high you can always set your own fan speed v's temps in the fan control section of msi,ive found this feature really useful,i've done a good overclock of my gtx 480 and in heaven benchmark the temps never go over 80 and are stable @ 78-80 through out the benchmark over 4-5 runs running maxed out settings to fully test.good luck.

EDIT: just to note the max gpu temp was 84 degrees running no overclock and stock fan speeds,so my max temp is now lower than it was on stock, and im running it overclocked :)

Running at 870MHz overclock with temps at Max Temp - 71
Average Temp - 70 in Furmark. Is this a safe temperature, or should I lower the voltage, and settle for a lower overclock?
