GTX 275 getting very hot when gaming

Having a few problems with my graphics cooling currently, as my GTX 275 is getting very hot when gaming :( say 100C hot :( I have to play with the side panel off currently. With than off, it drops to around 90C max. Is there anything else I can do to improve it currently?

My CPU cooling is fine, so it doesn't seem like it's the case, and once I get my waterloop in, I will be much happier overall (when I have my 480 also). But any ideas what I could do currently? Would it be wise to take the cooler off my GTX 275 and see if there is a lot of dust in it?

Sound like the HS is backed up with dust, if you can get access to an air compressor that will clear out all the dust no problem, no need to remove the cooler then, although cooler removal and some fresh paste can help as well.

Most likely dust, if you have access to an air compressor they work great for cleaning off heat sinks and you often don't have to dismantle the cooler to get most of the dust out with them.

The other possibility if cleaning the dust of does not work is that the heat sink has somehow stopped making good contact with the gpu (pretty unlikely) and the cooler needs to be refitted.

Sadly, I can't get easy access to compressed air, and I'm too skint to buy any :( I think it must be dust, and the fan was pretty bad last time.

Hit your nearest garage/petrol station and use a tire air compressor.

Haha. Not a bad idea :p I might see what my account has in it, and buy some, might have some to spare for compressed air. Rather spend it on that, than a pre-mature graphics update :) I might pop down to the place that rhymes with Chaplin tomorrow.

Chances most of the dust is in a big matted layer of dust just in front of the fan, if you can remove the shroud on the heat sink and just remove this layer of dust (wipe it off with a kitchen towel or something) it'll do a good enough job to prevent the card from reaching quite such high temps.

It's not worth bothering with a vacuum cleaner since it does sod all for removing dust and it can also allegedly cause issues with static which could potentially damage things.

I took the thing to bits, wrecked my fingers unscrewing the shroud from the heatsink, cleaned out the dust (pics of dust to follow later), and applied some new TIM. Temps currently, at 60C in TF2, when before was hitting around 80-90C :) And that's with the side panel back on too! Amazing temps!

I see you have good results cleaning it out but had you looked at the fan speeds before hand ? my cards run hot as hell if i dont manually crank up the fan speeds. It seems leaving them on auto just makes them want to set themselves ablaze

It's good to hear that you got the temp sorted out :p

And yea...besides removing the dust, applying some decent TIM could make a huge difference. My 9800GTX+ was hitting 80-82C when running Heaven Benchmark...after cleaning off the factory applied TIM and applied MX-3 instead, temp on Heaven Benchmark (well, on anything actually) was never going above 75C again :D

It was running at 100% fan speed mate :p Trust me, I had checked that long ago :p

Yeah, I'm really pleased. Got a good even spread of MX-3 on it with the old credit card approach :) Going to test it a bit more today, but I'm really pleased. Only downside is, my fingers are totally wrecked. Couldn't find a good screwdriver until I checked the other toolbox.

I take it you reused the memory/volt reg cooling pads? I wonder if removing them and reapplying them has an effect on their cooling performance.

Yeah, I did indeed reuse them. Didn't have any new ones to apply sadly :( Whatever I did, it worked very well. Pic below of dust:

Finally have the side panel back on my case also :D Been off for too long! Lol.
