Having nightmare OC'ing G0 Q6600 - any advice?

mines running at 3.3 atm, 367 x 9, as below.

I've only just started trying this, been playing games for last couple of hours okay although i am happy to admit prime95 isn't happy.

I've been trying to use LinX but i cant get it to do anything, Progress bar when started just sits on "please wait....." and the stop button doesn't work.

Note that i don't have a decent setup, running memory quite slack due to having 2 diff types of memory (2x2gb and 2x1gb).

I normally run stable at 3.1Ghz using 345x9 without issue.

Abit Ab9 Pro Motherboard

that could be the problem (not saying it is for sure) might be worth selling that and picking up a second hand p5q pro they go for around £40 these days and one of the best boards for overclocking a q6600.

This - IIRC its a 965 chipset - they pre-date the Q6600 by quite a bit and generally don't handle them well - I'd be unsuprised to find it can't supply the amperage required to keep the CPU stable at stock let alone OC'd.

Well thanks again for all your help. This is a nightmare. Even the 2.8ghz i had 'stable' (i hr prime95) caused a load of blue screens and restarts yesterday, just while doing normal stuff, copying files, installing programs.

Bit annoying as the Q6600 is on the Abit supported motherboard list, with the bios I have. Although CPUZ is reporting a different bios version than the BIOS screen. Is it worth reflashing? The latest is a beta (23) and im on 22 (i tink).

Ive tried it on 8x multiplier and even 6x to see if that helped, no difference. I also removed 2 sticks of ram, still no difference.

Thanks for the suggestions re mobo. Ive never built a pc before so i was (naively) thinking this would be a plug and play operation, and didnt want to pull the entire machine apart. But now over a week later im still messing around, and am about £150 down the tube. Quite honestly if im going to get a new mobo im going to buy a new i7 chip and associated mobo, ram etc and do it properly. Dont want to throw any more good money after bad as they say.

Grr why does everything have to be so difficult. This is so frustrating. Just want to get on with some music.

Thanks again for all your help. I really appreciate it.

Can someone just confirm please, i assume the CPU itself is likely to be fine? Ie they either work or dont?

Also how many posts do you need to see the members market?

Many thanks,

Ben

May be worth a try going to the latest bios, everything is worth trying, and yeh cpu's either work or they don't.

Think members market is 250 posts can't really remember, basically Go into the General Discussion section, post away, but don't spam, and you will soon get your post count up.

You will also get free shipping, at that stage too, aslong as you link the shop account to your forum account.

Just get a second hand p5q pro

Or a cheap IP35? They should be fairly common now. Mine is still going strong, Q6600 @ 3.2 with basic tweak. 1.45vcore in BIOS, 2.1v RAM 400*9.

Does the motherboard have load line calibration? That makes clocking the q6600's much easier. Altho if the mobo predates the processor I guess it's unlikely

i'm guessing my 3.1 with 1.28v core is decent then, really wouldnt like to have to run upto and over 1.4 to get above 3ghz

1.4v + is fine imo, I've been running that for a years or two, temps are around 55C under load with 1 X 900rpm fan on my Noctua, so not too bad.

Yea 1.4 volts seems the sweet spot mine does 3.5 ghz on that even up to 1.5 volts is safe though as long as temps are okay.
Not worth sourcing a p35 board at this stage when you can pick up a decent p45 board for around £40.

True, although I had a difficult time trying to locate a second hand P5Q, must just have been unlucky.

Mines currently at 3.6 with 1.4v, using a TRUE in push pull. Rock solid stability.

I will do a +1 to C64 about the P45 boards, I'm using a P5Q-E, Brilliant board.

Will be watercooling it soon.......unless I spill something on it lol.
