Some seemingly good information from the looks of things:

Firstly, we learn via Twitter from DICE rendering architect Johann Andersson the engine BF3 is built on -- Frostbite 2.0 -- is "primarily developed for DirectX 11"; XP and DX9 won't be supported (though you may be able to hack it). Also the engine will be especially optmized for 64-bit -- thankfully a lot of you have chosen the road less travelled. Good news in itself, but since consoles only support DX9, the implication is the PC version will be a "true" PC game.

Would be great to see them making a PC only version, just hope that they continue having a PC team to support after the game release, not the shocking POS excuse that they have had for BC2

As far as I know this came out later, as in, it is multiplatform, but they're saying the PC version is a true PC version.

all they've done is remove dx9support for the pc, that's hardly making it "pc game".

The engine clearly still supports dx9 no problem otherwise it wouldn't have a console version.

dx9 was probably removed for cost/ease of design purposes rather than to make it a "true" pc game, and has just been spun that way.

Again from the mouth of Johann, we're told Frostbite 2 is "developed simultaneously for the strengths of each platform (i.e. we use the best API for each platform)." In other words, it's a multiplatform engine, but a good one that should satisfy all players, no matter the platform

Reading the full article I'm afraid that just a small snipit of info as given by the OP has given me quite a bit of false hope.

Its worth a real of the full article to give some better info on what to be happy/sad about.

I did say "they're saying" :p

If future titles end up going this way looks like it will be a kick up the arse for a hardware refresh.

Would not be surprised if the game developers have agreements with hardware vendors :p

I think the big issue is Dev's are hearing us shout "we want pure PC games" and what they decide that means is "MOAR GRAFIX", and completely forget about the fact that what we actually want is solid gameplay, not flaky one time shooters.

True, but for me gameplay is just as important as graphics in an FPS game.
Crysis may not be the best gameplay out there (by far imo) but it makes mer say 'wow'.

Hilarious, developers/publishers say PC doesn't have a big enough revenue yet they go and alienate a massive amount of people by removing DX9 support. Good job.

Well the next Xbox generation is 5 years away.. so they're already getting annoyed at the limitations of the current Xbox then.. I think the planned 10 year lifecycle of the console may get cut shorter next time - 5-7 years instead.

really?

the 360 came out only 3 years after the first xbox, and the ps3 being about 6 years after the ps2.

I'd have thought the ext version would be out in 2-3 years max tbh.

That's what I keep being told about it. I think it's long in the tooth but those at MS think that the slim version is going to keep them in the market..

Personally I think that the fact the Xbox360 is a PowerPC coded platform is going to make it an interesting move next if they go with Intel..

I seriously hope they dont have squad spawning at least squad leader I can accept even tough I dont agree with any non base spawning

At what point is a console just a purpose built PC with games that offer input peripherals such as wheels, pads that consoles are traditionally shipped and used with and a streamlines operating system.

I mean, why even have a platform distinction these days...it's going to get to a point where the console developers just say "This is stupid....distinction for the sake of distinction"

I realise the marketing potency of it being a XBox/Playstation/Wii instead of "Personal Computer" as well as the support/warranty issues but yeah....

Perhaps one day there will be a bootable operating system to turn a PC into a 'console platform' alongside traditional console hardware which IS just a purpose built PC system with hardware.

Edit - Going to make a separate thread for more focused input! http://forums.overclockers.co.uk/showthread.php?p=17264232
