Seeing as my computer is up the spout for the foreseeable future, I went out and bought a bicycle. I bought two D-locks [these ones]. Are these effective enough? I have heard MANY stories of peoples' bike parts getting stolen [not sure what to do about the saddle, its oiled and a pain to carry around]. What are the best kinds of locks one should get and will these do for now?

If you are worried about your bike getting nicked, take out an insurance policy on it, it's only a few pounds a month. If you use a lock that's got a 'sold secure' rating, they will totally replace your bike if somebody cuts through it to steal it.

not bicycle but years ago i used to protect my motorbike by running a length of wire from the spark plug cap to the throttle grip so when someone started it up they got one hell of a shock.i did come back once to find it on it's side so i assume someone got curly hair.

a lot of D-locks can/could be prised open with a car jack if it'll fit inside the "D" part. Don't know what the newer ones are like though.

For my situation, I couldn't be bothered with the hassle of leaving a bike locked up somewhere only to come back to find it missing/parts stolen/damaged.
Bought a folding bike in the end for my commute. Not the best of rides but it's ideal for 2.5 miles each way to the train station for me.

Where are you locking it? A big motorbike chain is about as secure as you'll get, even better if you use a D lock with it (need two different tools to carry then). Not convenient to carry about though. Make sure whatever you lock it to is secure too, can use all the locks in the world, but its pointless if what its locked to is easy to cut/move.

Whatever you use, there is a way to get past it, but its about dettering any potential thieves and making them take someone elses that's easier. Unfortunately.
