My upgrade is due today, and I were looking specifically for a nice android phone with a keypad for texting, but I thought that those would be too expensive so I were considering any non android phone with a keypad too (previously had an LG Arena, couldnt type on it to save my life).

So I went to my upgrades page, and this is what was offered:

Hmmmmmm ......Sony Ericsson W995 for £174.99? Sweet! Just what I wanted !!!! :p

(Not, middle one! MIDDLE ONE!)

Upgrade things normally make no sense and its stupid how they are worked out!

How much do you pay per month, and what phone are you thinking of going for? (not out of those, at those prices obviously :p)

My tariff is a 50% discount one from an old job bonus, hence my upgrades are expensive, the last two years everything was full price (£260 online upgrade for LG Arena, I got it for £200 over the phone )

I'll definately be ordering the X10 Mini at that price, but I have to upgrade over the phone to make sure my discount doesnt get fudged up and make an attempt at sweet talking a better deal.

I have Flext 35 + Web n Walk Max, £57.50 tariff for £28.75 (900 mins or 1800 texts, plus 10 Gb per month of internet use including modem + VOIP). Great tariff, but full price upgrades unless I change it.

Perfect for browsing and MMOs, dont want to lose it.

Surely its worth squeezing an extra £100 and getting the Desire! You WILL be able to type on it fine, you just need a bit of practice.

I know £100 is £100, but its not that much when you consider the massive difference between an X10 mini and a Desire.

I assure you the keyboard experience and screen will be a world apart from an LG Arena :p

I cant type on touch screens :(

I use my phone purely for browsing and forums, plus a lot of modem use. I need buttons and preferably Querty which the X10 mini pro has. Browsing is a LOT easier on my k850i then it is on touch screens. I would actually take the W995 if I can haggle it down to free, but would still prefer the X10 mini for the Android at £70.

I actually really wanted the Compact V:

https://www.t-mobile.co.uk:443/shop/pay-monthly/t-mobile-compact-v/

But its not on my upgrade list, and its not android but windows mobile.

The thing that was funny was the W995 price compared to all the rest. It should be free for that one at least :(

I want to go back to SE because I've always found their UIs (at least on their non android phones) easy to use. I were also interested in the HTC touch pro 2 that has a slide out keyboard, but its not being released in the UK.

Or it is out in the UK, just not on T mobile, £350 sim free though :(

The retention would be 20% off, reducing my line rental by £5.75 to £23. That saves £103 over 18 months, but I dont think thats better than a £70 X10 Mini Pro.

Cool, I were having difficulty choosing between the X10 mini, and Samsung Wave over the phone, I told them I wanted a phone with a keypad for texting so thats why I werent too keen on the Wave although I liked its specs, plus it wasnt Android either. I asked about the W995 and they said it was discontinued unfortunately.

I said that while the X10 Mini Pro was ok as an android phone with keypad, I really wanted something bigger, but they didnt have anything else that fit that need (unless I paid loads for the full Xperia) , so they gave me the X10 Mini for free :)

It was out of stock though so I have to wait, and like every year I had to spend ages discussing the discount - I started out on advantage plan which was 50% off for life, and it got removed after my first upgrade, so I got 50% off through retentions and I just have to be patient with explaining that its meant to stay on there until I choose to cancel. They keep on putting notes on my account saying the discount cant be cancelled, but they never find them when I'm upgrading, so they put yet another useless note saying the same thing on there again.

Then in 18 months time, I need to go through all that over again, sigh.

+10 to haggle skill for snagging the X10 Mini for free, +5 for managing to maintain the discount :)

Haha, further proof that £30 a month doesn't mean getting everything free.
Bhavv, it's not because of your discount, I'm on 50% off (f&f) yet had much much cheaper prices than that.

I know, I've heard of other people on a discount getting cheaper stuff too.

I just got ripped off on my last phone, I'm not falling for that again.

I had a £60 K800i, free K850i (customer service offer, upgrades didnt want to believe I were offered it for free lol), £200 LG Arena (o.O!!!!), and now a free Xperia Mini on this contract.

I'm not paying silly prices like I did on the Arena again on a contract. Both the K850i and LG Arena were crappy, but one was free and the other was a huge waste. Although the K850i still makes a terrific camera since it has a proper flash.

I used to be told that the upgrade prices you get were based on your monthly allowance usage - if you actually used more allowance up you got cheaper upgrades. So if your like me and using <5 minutes and 0 texts per month, and just using the thing purely for internet, you would (apparantly) get ripped off on upgrades.

Actually, I remember it was the free K850i and tariff change that messed my account up. CS + Upgrades allowed it for free, and both said I could keep the discount. Then the discount got canceled, and the advantage plan people said 'They wouldnt have given you the upgrade for free and allowed you to keep the discount'. So i had to go back through retentions, and spoke to the same person that did my upgrade. She called the advantage people and asked them to put it back on but they still wouldnt, so she gave me a 50% discount through retentions that I need to renegotiate every 18 months now despite useless note after useless note saying I can definately keep it :(. Then I got ripped off on the LG, but not anymore, now I haggle!

Nah it's based on a lot of things, mainly though it's about who they want to keep cheaply to them.

Out of interest how much of that 10gb do you use per month? Or is it your only internet connection?

As robbo said typing on modern touch screen phone (the iPhone, Desire, galaxy s etc) are worlds away from that nasty LG (Remembers the cookie...)

I dont use much of it anymore, but it was my only internet connection when I got it at uni, then I kept it just for the discount (if I cancel it, then I cant ever get it again). Though I managed to reach 8 Gb of use twice so far this year and got a warning text. It was also the only way to get mobile broadband discounted as it was part of the tariff (lower limits could only be added on as additional services on top of the tariffs, and wouldnt get discounted):

So if I had got the 3 Gb with modem use one, it would cost £12.50 and wouldnt get discounted because it wouldnt be part of the plan, whereas this old max tariff has the 10 Gb one reduced to £11.25 as it is part of the price plan.

What I would really like to have is a pure data tariff, and maybe just 100 min + texts, but no one does those, and this was the best tariff I could get using the discount.

We have Sky broadband, though if I had to get my own then I would have changed to O2 by now.

I only just noticed that capped data rate o.O !!! Where did that come from . Oh, its the £1 max charge a day thing for the internet, I thought they were nerfing my Web n Walk :p

Sigh.

What I meant when I said that was if you are prepared to pay £30 per month, you will be able to get a contract deal that lets you have any phone bar the iPhone 4 free of charge.

This offer does NOT extend to carriers/direct upgrades and so on, they charge quite a lot more than than places like mobiles.co.uk etc.

What annoyed you so much about me saying that anyway? I am right you know ;)

I dont think that the bottom three phones would be free on £30 a month, but just about everything else on that list should be.

Robbo the context of the who conversation was upgrades, not new contracts, so no you are wrong :p

Upgrades are more expensive then new connections.

I would say that if a phone is free from £X per month, then if your tariff is £X per month too, the upgrade will be around £100.

If a phone is free from £X-10, then it should be free to upgrade to on the £X per month tariff :p

Thats a handy estimate to follow.

Exactly, once you know what network usage you require then find the best deal regardless of upgrade/new contract. The op has a decent contract so the extra cost of the phone is justified imo.

Personally I'd have gone for the gold nokia, bling bling :D

Yea, everytime I look through new contracts, I cant find anything better. T mobile can try and rip me off, knowing that I'm not going to want to lose this contract.

As a minimum, I would need Web n Walk Plus, thats 3 Gb per month and modem use, but it costs £12.50 pm, whereas I'm currently getting Max for £11.25.

The thing I dont need or want at all is the Flext 35, but that cant be changed without losing the web n walk max tariff and discount.

The cheapest 18 month contract is £15 pm, that plus £12.50 = £27.50, -£7.50 for my discount = £20, that would be pointless for how much I lose, and my upgrades would end up even more expensive. Plus my tariff cant be had anymore.

The alternative would be O2 and Broadband, but my brother already has broadband. He switches it off when he is asleep though and makes me use my T mobile, so I still need it :p

And EWWWWWWWW at the Gold Nokia lol!

Now, Imagine getting an I Phone 4 on my web n wak max tariff. I dont like Apple or I Phones much, but I definately wouldnt be able to resist that for the HSDPA + 10 Gb limit on an I Phone 4! My fingers would end up bleeding and dead from the browsing :(

HOWEVER, T mobile cancel all discounts on your tariff if they do let you upgrade to the I Phone :x.

Thats the biggest drawback to my tariff, I'm ALWAYS on the Internet because of it :x

No they don't. All that you can't have is the unlimited web&walk booster.
You still keep your f&f discount :)

Its not f&f though, its retentions. Im on unlimited web n walk tariff though, so thats probably the same thing.

The 10 Gb limit plus Modem use on an I Phone 4 is too good to be true, stop making me think its even possible :(

(* IM NOT EVEN THINKING ABOUT UNLOCKED SIM FREE I PHONE 4s RIGHT NOW, NO IM NOT, NOOOO NOOOOOOOO!!!!! *)

..... Must have .....
