Finance haters gonna hate :-)

I've only owned one auto, but i always found that you could control the gear change well enough for most normal driving just using the throttle. Again, like your experience with the BMW, the Saab didn't feel much quicker in manual guise
Yes you can, I think a lot of what people say about autos is down to them not being 'used' to driving them ...there is a technique to it after all, while you 'can' just press the loud pedal and go ...to actually get the car to do what you want is a little more involved than that, especially when you want to control the shift with the your foot ...on a hill while drinking some coffee ..so manually selecting isn't possible :p

I was going to bring this up but then R420LA6X2 is no auto nub, hell he's got a lot more experience than I do so I wasn't about to start a lecture on automatic driving techniques :p But you do have a point and I would be willing to bet lack of familiarity with autos or just crap autos is the reason a lot of people think as they do about them.

I appreciate the sentiment mate, tbh its probably more down to the e38 having a 5 speed 'box and my e36 having a 4 speeder.

Its weird, the e36 being smaller it should feel faster yet the e38 was the one that I found myself thinkling "Opps! I had better back off a tad..."

Anyway, back on topic..... :o

Ooo 4 speeder eh, I hadn't realised that tbh ...The Chevvy Impala rental car I had in Canada had a 4 speed auto and it was awful, it always felt sluggish ...never quite in the right gear for the job at hand. I guess 4 speeds are ok if you have a V8 with a huge load of torque but with the sixes ...it's just a gear short.

Nail & head mate. See! you were in a position to lecture me after all! :)
