Yes you can, I think a lot of what people say about autos is down to them not being 'used' to driving them ...there is a technique to it after all, while you 'can' just press the loud pedal and go ...to actually get the car to do what you want is a little more involved than that, especially when you want to control the shift with the your foot ...on a hill while drinking some coffee ..so manually selecting isn't possibleI've only owned one auto, but i always found that you could control the gear change well enough for most normal driving just using the throttle. Again, like your experience with the BMW, the Saab didn't feel much quicker in manual guise

I was going to bring this up but then R420LA6X2 is no auto nub, hell he's got a lot more experience than I do so I wasn't about to start a lecture on automatic driving techniques
But you do have a point and I would be willing to bet lack of familiarity with autos or just crap autos is the reason a lot of people think as they do about them.
