Hi hope this is a good question.
I've had an ATI 4870 for 1 year and it still plays Napoleon Total War & Crysis all ok right up to today!
But I haven't bought a new toy for a while and I've read and read about the GTX460 & 470 Nvidia cards and I know the 470 is a lot faster than the 4870.
Should I wait another 6 months if nvidia are bringing out a new generation of Geforce cards? I've heard rumors but nothing detailed.
I don't want to buy a 470 then see a new nvidia range come out by the end of 2010.
My 4870 is in a Gigabyte X58-UDR3. With a intel 920 with 6gigs of G-Skill DDR3.
Cooled with a Corsair H70 (Which is cooling the 920 really nice all i7-920 cores on idle simmer at 36C to 40C. Upto 58C when playing Napoleon Total War.
The 4870 has an aftermarket Vortek Neo cooler which goes upto 68C playing Napoleon.
Anyway, what do you think, should I buy the GTX470 or wait till 2011 and save the £250 till then for a new gen of Nvidia cards (If they are planned?).
cheers

Rumours, which tend to be true.
I'm pretty sure the 5XXX series were rumours until announcement ;)

Thats a no then

OP,a 470 is a very good card and a very good price too,if your 4870 is playing your games ok then do you need to upgrade?

If games you are playing are struggling then a 470 will be a very big boost to what you currently have

ATI's 6XXX series is due in a few months.

ATI-6*** sounds NICE!

But sometimes afew months can be how long is a piece of string. you know.
If under 6 months I will wait and see what ATI new range and price will be.
But if the GTX470 come down in price to £180 including VAT I think I'll get one.
Thanks for your replies appreciated!

I believe you'll see them this side of the new year. So.. 3-4 months.

It's not a new architecture (as such), or process, there isn't any reason for it to take ages.

I can live with 3-4 months.
I really hope ATI come out with something impressive with the 6*** series. Not just a renamed overclock of the 5*** series, but a complete new GPU chipset.

The consensus is that the 6870 will be 30% faster than the 5870 at stock. But who knows?
I'm not interested in them personally, waiting for the switch to GloFo which will hopefully be 28nm 7XXX series.

If the leaked benchmarks are to be believed (of which I'm not yet convinced...), then the 6*** series will be a bit if a beast, and a significant redesign of the 5-series.

As for when they will be released, all indications are for later this year. I wouldn't be surprised if it turns out to be October or November.

I bet the retail price will also be a 30% overclock on the 5870! lol;

I just don't know, if the 5870 drop near to 50% in price when the 6*** ati cards arrive I may just get a 5870 or keep looking at Nvidia cards....

Personally I'd hold fire with that 470 purchase, there will be a card refresh at some point using the cooler running, less power consuming GF-104 chip that's currently going into the 460.

There's no new architecture as such going to be released in the next 6 months just card refreshes and possibly a new dual gpu card from Nvidia.

A decently overclocked 470 isn't that far behind those results (if true) and a decently OC'd 480 is a little a head. So not really something to get that excited about.

I really hope the ati 6*** will be something special. It will give the oommph to Nvidia to really design a power house next gen GPU (Maybe?) I can dream lol.
Thanks for all your replies.

To tell the truth to all of you guys, if the ati 4870 or 4890 came down to £70 from the £117 price point it is hovering at now, I would buy a second one for crossfire! And wait to see how the ati 6*** cards pan out, and what Nvidia has up their sleeve.

470s have just come down to a great price of ~£230, I doubt 6xxx will affect it much so it's not a bad time to buy.

Then your going to love my next question.
Should I buy a GTX470, or get another 4870/4890 so I would have crossfire with a one 4870 & one 4890?
Or have I just entered a complete new can of worms!?:D

Hi, kmufc77, thanks very much for your first link, an ATI 4870 1gb for £86 inc VAT.
Now you have really got me thinking. It's a Grade A Refurb. No biggie, just as good as new.I've had refurb parts before and all ran great.
oh man what to do, what to do?
