Good evening folks,

So next weekend I am embarking on my first long haul flight alone, and a tad nervous.

I just wondered if anyone had any advice or ideas about essentials to put in my hand luggage as it basically works out at 24hours with the time difference start to finish.

Thank you for any help in advance

Mel

Can't say I've ever taken anything other than some form of music player and maybe something to read. Don't think you can take toothpaste and you defiantly can't take deodorant, so there's not much else I can think of that is worthwhile!

Whaatt?! Can't take deodrant?? I thought it was some 100ml or less rule nowadays

Man if that's true it sucks, damn terrorists

Think of it this way - you will not see your main luggage until you get to the other end.

Toiletries are the important and a change of undies. You will, after a sleep and to freshen up so pack a flannel in there too.

You will get bored of everything after the first 6 hours. You will have read all your mags, probably got bored of your iPod.. etc. However - fear not.. an odd thing usually happens - you start talking to the other passengers and reading their stuff. Especially if they're on the same set of flights.

Switch your phone off. Then only use it when you're at the other side (turn off data roaming too or face a mammoth bill). Use an iPod or something else on the flight. Oh and cattle class means you'll not usually have an power adaptors. Take a pack of cards or a game that doesn't require batteries.

In case you're caught on a long (24hr) stop over the only thing a hotel doesn't have is deodorant.. as your luggage will be kept in unless you want to re-check it in (not advisable).

If the flight is a set of flights, you'll be on the plane between the landing and take off.. don't expect to get off. I'd usually buy a load of munchies.

Now if you're first class and a transfer then you may get an offer of a hot shower between flights - take it but don't expect to have access to your main luggage.

Check on your flight provider's website for the current 'prohibited' list..

I don't see the point in carting a load of guff on the plane. I just have my passport and tickets in my pocket and a newspaper bought from the airport and that's it.

When I went to Australia last year I took..

A bit of reading material
A laptop with extended life batteries and two spare batteries
Noise cancelling headphones
Crisps/Snacks
Bag with toothpaste, shaver, etc
A fresh tshirt for just before the second plane landed.

I fly to hong kong once a year on Cathay pacific and even the cattle class have plugs. Its a 14 hour flight and to be honest, its fine.

I carry my iPod, and basically spent most of the time watching the movies and haw a nap in between. The most important piece of gadget is noise cancelling headphones. I don't bother to get change, I mean 24 hours is the same as ny other day in between showers anyway, and its not like i am playing a game of football and sweating my ass off.

You will get food, a lot of food, snacks, and 2 meals on a long haul flight, just take your shoes off and get comfortable.

Well the best food I ever had was Cathay Pacific - an inch thick steak on a flight between Manilla and Hong Kong.

I wouldn't say CP are typical.

The longest flight I have been on has only been ~12 hours, but my essentials would be:
- Decent earphones for listening to the in-flight films as the ones they provide are always crap and let in loads of noise from the plane.
- A few pairs of decent ear plugs so you can get some sleep.

You can take (almost) anything you like fluid-wise, as long as if it's liquid it's 100ml or less and you carry it in a clear plastic carrier thingy.

I take one of these whenever I travel:

I'd take a change of underwear and a clean tshirt, maybe a skirt or shorts to change just before landing if you're going somewhere warm. You can fill a quart-sized ziploc bag with toiletries under 100ml - essentials for me would be wet wipes, lip balm and deodorant. I've heard mixed things about moisturisers on planes but I would always carry some anyway.

Buy a big bottle of water in the airport so you can keep hydrated throughout the flight, WH Smith are generally quite cheap. I'd take a few different books and magazines plus an mp3 player for entertainment.

Thanks guys! You're stars! :D
It's Jet Airways from Heathrow to Mumbai then to Hong Kong. I am so scared of just getting trapped in Mumbai in the middle of the night lol

Take what you fancy through security within reason and 100ml maximum size liquids, then buy anything larger once you're airside past security boots/whsmith etc. That's how i do it and i work for an airline. :D

I'm quite relieved that I can take some deodrant with me hehe.

I've found my noise cancelling headphones, think i'll change the battery before I go.
Hmmmm, need to find out how big this hand luggage can be

Just google hand luggage allowance on X airline.

Oooohh...
"Piece Concept : The Government of India regulations permits only one piece of cabin baggage on board. The dimensions of which should not exceed 115 linear cms and weight should not exceed 7 kgs."

55 x 35 x 25 cms apparently, so my backpack should be cool.

Thanks again guys
