I often wonder how Steam actually makes any profit - it must all be eaten up in bandwidth charges. Unless they have an unlimited deal with some 'kind' ISPs.

i recon they operate there own Datacenter's say 1000 Servers in a Datacenter £3 k each running all with 1GB links to Level 3. that probably cost £30k a month.
£300,000 - Servers One off
£30,000 - Connection - Every Month
£20,000 - Electric - Every Month
£10,000 - Staff - Month
£50,000 - Building costs & other Stuff
Meh, 'game' is very arbitrary. If you bought 3-5 indie titles which can be just as entertaining you'd get the same price as a mainstream publisher focused on profit.
But anyway, when steam sales are on who knows, otherwise i don't buy many. There aren't many titles i'm willing to preorder and recently i'm getting put off that.
There are online stores that deal in selling serial keys taken from boxed games that have various problems. Damaged box, sleeve or disc, excess stock and so on.
I try and stick to a policy of "one in, one out" - I finished Ratchet and Clank today, so felt justified in picking up a copy of Guitar Hero 5
It averages out to a game and a bit a month for me - the exception being Steam deals, big releases coming in clumps and when I go back into WoW which effectively stops me playing other games
I only tend to buy games that I feel I'll enjoy. This month It's been StarCraft II, prior to that the last games I bought were in the Steam Christmas sales I think.
I don't buy a new game every X days to keep myself amused. I buy good games, if two come out close to each other, cool, if I have to wait a few months between, cool.
At least once a month, though sometimes as often as once a week. This is across all platforms. I do work in the industry though, so often I'll play stuff that I feel I should play for research/comparison.
