New poster, new gaming PC build

You do not need 700w for a xfire 5870. Go and look at reviews with full system under load graphs.

Google '5870 crossfire power draw" and check all the reviews.

Here is the first one I just found to help you get started:
http://www.tweaktown.com/reviews/29...870_graphics_card_in_crossfire_x/index14.html

The OP requires help and you spurting out crap isn't helping.
A system with a heavily clocked cpu, a hard drive or two and 2 5870's will need no more than 600w.

The PSU that mattjd spec'ed is good and allows for future upgrades:).

As I said, the PSU Mattjd specced only has one pair of pci-e cables, you need two pairs for a Xfire setup; hence my ammended suggestion of an Antec TruePower; because you were throwing your toys out the pram about me suggesting the Sapphire.

I posted a quote from a review stating a 700W+ PSU is needed to run Xfire 5870s due to the current it needs to pull. If you can't be arsed to read the review I posted, I don't see why I should read yours.

Anyway now the OP has dropped to a 5850, the 650W Truepower should be adequate... Although I'm sure mglover will be over shortly to tell you that you can now run the whole setup by just pushing all the power connectors into a potato. ;)

ETA: Just to make this post beneficial to the OP. Your [OP's] AMD build was the best so far (Post #12); 5870, Xfire supporting mobo, CM 690, enough power for two 5870s and an H50 for watery goodness. Pretty sure you could knock some money off there too, 955 instead of a 965, saves £10; Antec 750 instead of Corsair, saves £20; drop to the non-turbo 5870, saves £15. That's down to about £1030. Then maybe, buy an air cooler instead of water for now, if you really wanted it under £1k.

How much is the potato? ;)

I found a board which doesn't drop the SATA3 for Xfire:

It's feature heavy of course but the ability to xfire at x16/x16 caught my eye. So I've included this in an updated AMD spec. My next idea was to leave the GPU for now and use the onboard HD4920 until ATi release new cards and we see some price-drops on the 58XX.

Here it is:

So what do you think?

I don't think the fx chipset has onboard gpu, only the gx chipset does, which does crossfire at 8X/8X

and the 955CPU is cheaper and only 200mhz or 1 clock multiplier lower, which is simple to adjust due to the unlocked multiplier of the black edition chips.

You're right on the mobo. Adding the GPU back in stat!

Good point on the CPU. 11 pound is 11 pound. Keeps me within budget too!

Well I've put the order through. Many thanks to everyone that helped. I'll be rewarding you all with progress and pics of my installation. One added bonus is that since I get a new screen the missus can have my current 32" beast in the living room. Just don't tell her about the extra £144 I spent...

Looks like it's in the van already. That's my night sorted then!

I missed a 2.5" HDD mount off the order but the nice guys at Overclockers amended it and included it in the box. Good show :)

Well I've been having some issues with it. I have a post elsewhere and just put in an RMA webnote. I think the PSU is faulty as sometimes I can cold boot, sometimes I can't, even with default BIOS settings. It's very hit and miss. When it does boot it runs like a dream.

I dug out an old Tagan PSU from a previous build and it's booting every time, though in order to get my GPU connected I've had to get creative with the modular PCI-E connectors and their MASSIVE protective boots.

Anyway when I sort this issue out hopefully I'll have clocked up enough hours to break in the Arctic Silver thermal compound, it's getting cooler every day. Then I'll start with the overclocking :)

Just got my first try with the free COD MW2, boy does that look beautiful :)
