hi all,

thinking of going 480 gtx sli.now heres ahard question.

i currently have a 470 gtx

i have an 850 watt tx corsair powersupply, x58 ud7 mobo, 6gb ddr3 ram, i7 930 @ 4ghz, corsair h50 cpu cooler, 3 extra fans in a haf x case, bluray drive, nzxt fan controller, 1tb hdd and m audio sound card. i wont be able to sli will i ?

should i upgrade my psu ? ahah ive only just built it.

Doubtful.

200w + for the CPU
330w Peak for each GTX480. More if you overclock, and a hell of a lot more if you up the voltage.

A stock system might be OK though.

On anandtech there are some power draw figures for SLI GTX480s. Under max load (furmark) the setup draws 851W at the wall, so around 750W total, given a ~90% power efficiency. This should be within the capability of the TX850, but will be pushing it towards its maximum capacity. Also consider that you have a heavily overclocked CPU, so that will add to the power requirements.

In short, the answer is "probably, so long as you don't overclock them", but it's impossible to be 100% certain without trying. It will likely come down to the capability of your specific PSU.

Why not consider SLI'd 470s? This should give you a bit more headroom...

well basically i just wanna max metro 2033. you reckon 470 sli would max metro ? am i being daft wanting to sli 480 ?

would it just be best waiting for a patch/driver update to optimise the game and go 470 sli ? what fps am i going to be looking at

Have a look at a few reviews / benchmarks and see.

As for "maxing metro 2033", from what I've seen even tri-SLI GTX480s will struggle somewhat at 1920 or 2560 res. But, if you disable tessellation and choose "AAA" for antialiasing, you will see a massive increase in performance (around double the framerate), for virtually no loss of visual quality.

Sorry but who in there right mind would spend that amount of money for one game and still not be able to max it out. Surely it would be better to get that 4Gb Asus monstrosity thing thats about £900 odd.

I have a power draw meter that my PC base unit runs through and with the specs in my sig at full load it will draw 870watts max. I run mine off the corsair 1000watt supply which i would say is a must if you want to run sli 480s.

is that including the monitor ? what volts are you putting throught the cpu and the gpu's ?

cheer

just get another GTX470, it will give you a large performance boost and you won't have to shell out for two overpriced graphics cards and an expensive PSU!

Metro 2033 is the new Crysis, even with GTX480 SLI you're not going to be able to turn on all the bells and whistles

if your only using 870 watt at the wall running everything overclocked, then that would confirm that a good 850watt PSU would be fine

I bought a toughpower 1200 psu, its awsome and should fill my needs for the forseeable future!

That's all well and good, but is it running anywhere near efficient?

@ the OP, I would say your 850w unit would be ample for 480's SLI'd

Very, very few people actually need a 1kw unit.

You sure about that? To me that reads as though an 850W PSU would need to be operating at something like 103%. Impossible unless it's listed as 850W but can actually produce more and even then it'll be very close to absolute maximum

just get another 470 and use the £475 you save for water cooling and other future upgrades/bills/projects/'projects'

Don't risk it. I listened to people telling me it'd be no problem and I ended up melting the 24 pin ATX plug in the motherboard socket, killing my P6TD-D and a Coolermaster CM850 at the same time. Once you start overclocking the power draw shoots up even further.
