Am looking at upgrading from a 19" (1280x1024) to a 24" widescreen (1920x1080) monitor. CPU is an Opty 165 @ 2.6ghz.

Question is how much would I need to spend on GFX so that gaming at around 1920x1080 won't suck balls?
I'm not an uber PC gamer but when I do play the odd game here and there, I'd like reasonable performance.
I have been gaming at 1280x1024 with an 8800gt and it's been fine overall, just finding a few newer games recently are suffering a bit and am thinking a GFX upgrade would be better at the moment than a new cpu/mobo/ddr etc.
Have been out of the GFX loop since last upgrading around 18 months ago.

Your CPU will be a limit at 1920x1200, I'd be surprised if it wasn't limiting your GPU already to be honest.

He would still see a massive boost with a new card, more so than any other £160 upgrade if he kept his 8800gt.

Cheers for the thoughts.
I know my system is getting a bit dated now for gaming but I can't really justify spending out £400-500+ on a new cpu/mobo/memory and GFX just to get a better gaming experience. I thought maybe £150 or so on new GFX would give a happy medium.
The system suites me fine for what I use it for apart from gaming, which is a shame!

CPU will be a massive bottleneck with a 460, upgrade your system, you can do it for as little as below.

I'd probably get this 5770 1gb for £117.49 It's a much faster card than you have now and the 1gb will make a difference at 1920x1080. You will probably find games a bit hit and miss wit that setup. COD will probably run pretty much flawless but GTA4 will be bordering on unplayable. There are a new wave of CPU bound games so you would have to do some research before buying or download a demo.

I wouldn't upgrade from that graphics, your CPU will bottleneck with any decent card so money wasted. Save up for a better platform first. £200 is all you need for an upgrade.

Dammit guys! It's a bit cheaper than I thought to upgrade everything so now it's more tempting.
I suppose and I won't miss the money, it's not as though it's making lots of interest sitting in a crappy savings account!

I'll go do a few checks on upgrading the whole kit!

The higher the res you go, the less cpu bound you will be. Fact.

Well it's just more a case of the graphics card will struggle more but the CPU work will be pretty much the same. The phyics (not Physx) of the game doesn't really get more complex just because it is outputted at a higher resolution but to the graphics card, each increase in resolution is quite a bit more work.

If you're changing your cpu, mobo, etc now I'd try and get a phenom II dual core (555). If you can stretch to a good cooler and oc I think it will be a good rig with a 460. Plus with the right mobo you can try and unlock more cores, but that's not going to be guaranteed. There's always the six core upgrade if you need it as well.
