Car rental without credit card?

Going on holiday next week but have to get down to Manchester airport from Edinburgh. Five of us going so the plan was to rent a cheap little car and just drop it off at Man airport. Problem is I'm the only one of the five of us who has a licence (other boys either just don't have one or have lost theirs..idiots!) but I don't have a credit card, which seems to be a requirement with every hire company. VISA debits are not accepted.

Now I've given a few companies a call and asked if one of the lads could book the car with his credit card, but with me as the driver, which isn't allowed either. Bit of a pain as the train takes 7 hours at the times we need! Can anyone think of any way around this problem? The only thing I could think of would be to get my dad to book the hire car and have me as a named driver. Not sure if this would get me into any trouble though if I was clearly going to be the only one driving?

Leaving in 6 days so having a wee panic. Might have to start walking to Manchester today!

Just get your dad to do it with you a named driver, they dont care whos driving.
 
I had the same problem when trying to hire a transit van to move house, everywhere required either a credit card or be at least 25. In the end I found a local company which had much fewer requirements, they were happy for me to hire with cash, however it may be different if driving a long way from the place. Try the little local companies, might have some luck! Or get a cheap banger to do a road trip in, then sell it when yer done :P
 
Have you tried Enterprise Rent A Car? They take any form of payment (except cash), Also if you have no licence they can Phone the DVLA for the info.

I know this as i work for them, Also it does depend on how old you are, You have to be over 25 to rent from most company's.
 
Cheers will give Enterprise a call then. Website wants a CC for booking and for some reason wont allow me to select a different location for drop off. Need to speak to a human.

Otherwise I'll just bully my old man into hiring for me!

You could use a prepaid credit card... I use one by payzonemoney in ireland and it works perfect. I'm sure there are people in england doing it.
 
I used Enterprise fairly recently and didn't use a credit card, no issues at all with Visa Debit - however I am over 25 so that might or might not impact on it. Worth speaking to them properly though.
 
:confused: I've never needed to use a credit card when hiring a car :s seems a bit backwards tbh with a credit card payment always being disputable.

Also one of the reasons you may want to pay with a Credit Card, incase they try and stiff you with things like fuel on return and such.

Trouble with your Dad renting it and having you as a named driver is that there might be an extra charge to have you as a named driver.
