Right its car buying time and all things going well ive decided to go and look at a car about thursday

Basically its a 306 gti6
Been looking at them a while now and only seen a few i consider buy worthy as ive been a bit picky. Anyway now its time to buy ive decided to go for one that may not be mint but that can be made a good example

Its for sale on 306gti6.com

Its china blue ( navy)
Has the usual gti6 rip in the seat

The things that are putting me off are

It has mods
Specifically a magnex full exhaust with a de cat pipe and kn filter
E tech strut braces
Powerflex wishbone bushes

It comes with the original exhaust ( minus the cat)
This worries me as cat cost serious cash right? Although i can get them on the owners forum for about 50 i dont know how much a new peugeit one would be

Also there is a stratch on the rear quarter i have a photo of it though and its not to bad

Finally there is a gearbox issue relating to 1st and 3rd being closer together
He says this is a gear linkage rod and after research someone sells them for 40 quid on the site
Luchly for me theres a gearbox specialist over the road and the recondition them etc

Basically the car is 1750 and has a low 77 miles
The cambelt was done at 70k which i dont care about as i will be doing it anyway and te clutch is fairly new

Basically my hope is that instead of paying 2500 for one that has no real issues but 90k or more i can get this one and sort it out so its a real good one and costs about the same after the work

Reason behind the lack of mods is i dont think i could afford mods on insurance i expect it will bump up the insurance a lot and i cba with emissions isue with a decat either

Any one have any advice or thoughts etc?

You're looking at 10+ year old hot hatchbacks that have long since fallen into the hands of Chavs. Getting worked up about things as insignificant as a scratch seems silly.

That being said, the car that you describe sounds far from ideal particularly with the gearbox issue that you mentioned. It could be a sensible fix, but you've always got to ask yourself why he doesn't just get it sorted himself?

I'd personally say Forget it and move on. It is not like there is a shortage of these cars £1,700 is plenty of money for a GTI6. It's not going to get you a minter but it'll get you something presentable at the very least.

It sounds like a bag of cack to me, having read his advert, its not very well laid out or comprehensive.

Why would you drive a car with fudged gear selector rods when a new set from Miles isn't very expensive at all. The gearbox doesn't need to come off, there are a couple of rods from the bottom of the gearstick that lead to the gearbox, which is what needs replacing I assume.

I wouldn't care about milage one bit, I would buy on condition. Every GTI6 will have been thrashed, so a 100k one which has had everything replaced is better than a tired 70k.

I bought a 65k miler and then spent a fortune on it for it to then go and HGF on me, so found that out the hard way.

Given that you don't mind doing a bit of work to it (cambelt etc) I would recommend either of these, but not that many great cars have come up recently.

The high milage blue one is cheap enough to do the belt and clutch on if needed and then will be fine.

The red one has much better history and just needs a new cambelt.

And finally the last blue one is from a trader, has had the belt done and will be in good condition, plus you're going to have a warranty with it being trade.

If you to take a crack at a cambelt yourself , make sure you check and double check everything - as its far to easy to end up with a "tapper" as the valves/pistons run very close on this engine !

Oh i ment sort it as in get it done lol

Im thick at cars tbh i intend to change that though

If your "thick" it might not be the best idea then, you could potentially damage pistons. Upto you though mate but take time in doing it.

Avoid the one in the OP, too risky imo.

Can't go wrong with the one from Carl really and worth paying the extra for I you know it's going to be 100% and if not he seems like a very sound bloke and knows GTi6's inside and out!

Price of these is depressing me :( It's why I've kept mine for so long. Going to goin about a year or so though.

Damn, keep forgetting mine needs it cambelt soon as it's coming up to 75k. Grr

Second or third cambelt on your car then! :o

Astor are worth good money though, one of the best colours!

Would place it at 2k+ still depending on spec/mods! I paid £2400 for my low milage Moonstone one 2 years ago. Plus not much you can replace it with at that price given your car is a known quantity.

I would want a bmw 330/ mr2 turbo/ skyline after a gti6
Obviously you could go for a similar thing like a clio 197 but the above are cars i would consider to replace my 306 of the possible near future

I bought a Rover 220 to tide me over, modded that and sold it for what it owed me, then bought a supercharged Xsara VTS, which is almost the same as the 306 GTI when standard, but I have 50% more power now....

I'm going for a comfy arm chair next, knocking on an all that. Only doing 3k miles a year at the minute so not much point in going through the hasstle of changing though and it treats me well.

Yer I'd be hoping for £2k when I sell but will have to see at the time. Getting it's 2nd (or 3rd, previous owner said it was done but had no proof so didn't risk it so it was done by me at 45k). Mine get's looked after by the service manager at Rochdale Peugeot, really knows his stuff and hes a friend of my girlfriends Dad so I get very good rates :o

Just had it valeted today and I always forget how good Astor is as it's been dirty for too long :o, such a deep colour, once polished up it looks... wet! :p

Air Con's not working on my though and the pipes prices are ridiculous.

Same rotex kit as the GTi6's I take it? Didn't know you had one! Just low boost? Do it yourself as I remember you're pretty handy with a spanner.

Always said if I won the lottery I'd keep my GTi6 and charge it just for kicks. :p

I might be breaking my Xsara VTS soon if it can't be fixed for a reasonable price so If the pipes are the same I will have a set of non-corroded ones!

I wonder if they are better insulated or something on the Xsara's, all three of mine had brilliant working aircon!

Yeah its the same kit as the GTI6.

I bought it predone earlier this year, it was done by Carl and pretty much has new everything paid for by the previous owner.

Still ended up spending and doing more work than I had hoped on it.

New clutch cable, new TPS, new master cylinder to date.

Also fitted a 16 row setrab oil cooler with mocal thermostatic plate and braided lines.

Next thing to go on are some Renaultsport front calipers and larger discs, and raise my rear beam back to standard!

Cool so a bit of a bargain then?

Any pic's etc?

Just noticed you're in Wigan, was back there this weekend seeing the parents. Will have to keep my eyes open!

(Sorry for the mini hi-jack but it's kinda relevant!)

GT3, if and when you do drop us a PM and I may be interested thanks. :)
