Asus rampage III Extreme

No it would be mainly for crunching seti and folding which does not require an sli bridge as the gpu's work seperately , i was looking for the 4 way sli bridge purely for benchmarking....Thanks for the reply :)

I've just been reading up on this motherboard and I've got a couple of questions for you guys:

It looks like it comes with a lot of ROG software for overclocking. Is this any good, are you able to hit 4ghz+ with this software without using the BIOS?

Also, does the motherboard produce a lot of heat? If I wanted to hit 4.3 - 4.4ghz on an i7 930, would it be necessary to watercool the mother board?

Thanks guys :)

The ROG software is very good but only for minor tweaking after overclocking in BIOS. So if you feel the system isn't stable in Windows, just crank up the volts without going into BIOS and restarting.

Getting an overclock like that will really depend on the chip. The motherboard itself runs quite cool.

To overclock an I7 past 4.0 Ghz depends on the CPU, not the motherboard.

The motherboard is very capable of helpig you to do that, but you need a good CPU too.

Bah, my CPU cooler is so ugly, but very effective and I cant find anything better. Even the Corsair H70 review temperatures were the same as mine. I could try lapping, could just do the cooler first, and the CPU later if I need better results.

Asus need to make a matching red + black ROG series Triton cooler for these boards :(

Wow, so everytime I reinstall kapersky after a fresh reinstall, I get my license renewed for 365 days?

Yay!

I would have thought Kaspersky would keep a count of the number of times you activate on its activation servers. So probably best deactivate/uninstall before you reinstall it. You could ask here.

My vantage code on the back of my CD sleeve had a block of letters rubbed out ! :(

I had deleted it when doing my backups and moving over to my new hard drive setup, went to reinstall vantage earlier and no more key :(

I took a picture and emailed futuremark support.

Evening peeps your thoughts please.
I wanted to build a top notch crunching rig so i bought the rampage 3 a hafx case with i7 930 6gb ram and thermaltake 1500w toughpower.
Initially i installed it with 1 gtx480 and it would cut out after 1 or two minutes, did some research and realised it was a known problem the northbridge temps would sky rocket and cause the shutdown. Was a bit cheesed off and bit the bullet, removed the heat pipe assembly to find a very small amount of some nasty yellow gunk that resembled foam insulation. Removed it all applied mx3 reseated and all was ok.
I carried on and added 1 480 at a time installed checked temps in between. Fourth gpu was a 470 and the system would shut down after maybe half or one hour. I monitored the temps in bios all was ok.
Then i realised i had only connected 1 of the 8 pin power plugs to the board and one of the 2 molex connections.
I just wanted to ask you guys before i go ahead and try to figure out how the heck am going to congigure psu leads and cable is that the most likely cause of the unexpected restarts?
Trouble is i dont have another 8 pin socket cable, though there is a 4 pin connection on the end of the 1st 8 pin, is there such a thing as a 4 pin to 8pin adapter if there is would it be suitable and still supply the power to the board?
The second molex which i do not have either i guess is a matter of reconfiguring power cables to other devices and using a splitter of some sort but does it need to be directly fed from the psu or is it just supplemental voltage which can run off a splitter.

Well thanks for taking the time to read this and hopefully someone might be able to point me in the right direction.....thanks in advance all :confused:

**edit** Its working fine with 3 x 480 its only when i add the 4th gpu

Have you tried checking your power consumption at all?

The second 8 pin power connector isn't necessary as the CPU will be getting more than enough power, so the only thing I can think off is that the PSU can't cope with the four graphics cards.

Yeah will see if i can find one in town tommorrow. Have checked and double checked the psu info and website and it says it supports(cable wise at least) 4 high end nvidia gpu.
Thanks for the response :)

:D No i pay for the leccy but i can justify it for a new toy and crunching :D

fair enough kind off topic but with little ones of my own and lots a spare parts i want to get my i7 rig folding 24/7 in a normal month how much more can i expect to pay you think being a real world user? we talking an extra £10 a month or £ 50? taking into account lets say 1 gfx card not 3 :D
