Here's the picture: I have a 64gb wifi iPad and my parents are wanting to swap it for their Macbook. It's not the latest 10 hour battery life Macbook, but the slightly older 7 hour batt life one. (I actually used to have this model and advised my parents to go for this one).

I use my iPad for general surfing and email, but it would be nice to have the Macbook out and about with me to store pics on (plus I do have a Vodafone wireless dongle).

The Macbook was bought through the education store so does still have about 2.5 years of hardware warranty left on it. The one downside is it's only got 2gb RAM - I'd have to shell out for a 4gb upgrade.

Shall I trade? I might think about selling that and my Mac Mini to get a Macbook Pro.

Only 2GB RAM? You are swapping it for an iPad, so it's not like you need it for anything memory intensive. OS X runs just fine on 2GB for general surfing and word processing.

Depends really, if you want to sell the iPad to fund a MacBook Pro I would keep it. Then again you might get the MacBook and be happy with it. I recently sold mine to get a 24" iMac.

I second this.

If you just want the MacBook to store pictures on it sounds a bit wasted really. Upload them somewhere?

Trouble is I use Aperture 3 which runs quite sloth like at the best of times. Can't afford to swap to Lightroom 3 which seems to run much better. (Can't stand the Lightroom export to Picasa Web plug in either and I'm not getting on too well with flickr for sharing to non flickr users.)

I used to have this exact same model of Macbook (though with 4GB). I sold it to fund the iPad.

Apart from the Vodafone 3G Dongle, what else would you use the laptop for that the iPad can't do?

Proper word processing (ie complex documents and on a hardware keyboard). The pages for iPad app is great for simple stuff, but I need some advanced Word features (like alternating portrait to Landscape pages with section breaks).

Only thing the MacBook will be really rubbish at is kindle app. I can't stand it on OS X. iPad/iPhone it's great. Oh also, I'm kind of used to the iPad's epic battery life now ;-)

personally id have macbook,, i also have a kindle dx so prefer that for reading and got a ipad as well or 3 (kids have 2 as well)

much prefer the macbook, then kindle for reading..

Go for the iPad. You will soon realise that so many tasks can be replaced by it.

But of course it's your decision. :)

Well I decided to flog the iPad. Flogged it, just waiting for the cheque to arrive now. Missing it already :-(

Nothing - need money to pay for new camera, so I'll survive with the MacMini until I've got some excess cash (that'll be sometime next decade then!)

Fair play. Stick a load of RAM in and they're a very capable little machine.
