So it's been about 6, 7, maybe 8 years now since I did a build, it's that long ago I cant remember. My current PC is as per the sig below :( actually less the 6800 Ultra as that died earlier this year and I have a Gf4 MX440 with a whole 64meg of ram holding the system together at the mo!

I've pretty much decided on the spec of the tower but am struggling over monitors. Currently I have a very old 17" Sony SDM-HS75P (cost me over £300 back when i brought it......crazy!!) which whilst I like it I always thought it didnt seem particularly smooth when playing games. I dont want to make this mistake again as as you can tell I like to make my equipment last some time!

So I was looking at the Dell U2410 ultrasharp monitor. The PC will be used for gaming, photo editing, internet, document creation etc etc, really a bit of everything. Having my games play smoothly is critical though. I have read a little on issues with this monitor but I think I am correct in saying all of these have been corrected via firmware updates?? Will the dell cut the mustard gaming? It's response time doesnt appear to be as fast as others. I like playing FPS, flight sims (FSX, WWII flight sims etc), car sims. From reading on here I know it'll do the rest perfectly. Also spending this amount of money I dont really want there to be any issues.

Cheers in advance.

I'm pretty sure they would have ironed out most issues, but also concider the
(Smaller) Dell U2311 at a 16:9 (wider) aspect ratio as this will accept 1080p resolution from other sources and will give you a wider FOV (Field of view)

I guess that depends on how the game handles the extra 120px the u2410 has. It could just add more vertical res to the view port so in effect the field of view is jut the same as your still dealing with 1920 width.

I'd prefer a 1200px vertical res over 1080px if I had to choose. I'm due to pickup a ZR24W today. I think that's a good monitor for the price, slightly better than the u2311 but not quite as good as the u2410 - IMO.

is the ZR24W a 16:9 widescreen monitor ?

Thanks for the replies. I have been looking at the 23" Dell and that may end up being the better monitor for me anyway due to its lower lag response. Its appears to be calibrated better out of the box too which suits me as I have no way to calibrate a monitor colours. The only downside to the 23" that I see is the lower vertical res.

I am thinking along the lines though that whatever I get is going to be a cast improvement over the 17" 4:3 ratio monitor I have currently. With the money saved getting the 23" over the 24" I could put a 240gb SSD in the system rather than the 180gb I currently have specced. So now its down to the bigger monitor or bigger SSD?!

Most new games do support 16:9 ratio, and if they did just add 120 horizontally that would not be true 16:9 and the image would look squished/stretched.

personally I have not seen that happen for a very long time. (And not by design)

the 1200 res vertical is better for vertical Feild of view. So you could argue it that way as well. I was thinking the PS3 would look better on a 16:9 1920x1080 than it would on a larger res screen with borders.

personally I'd buy a 21:9 panel if they existed in the desktop market :) Finally wide enough!

The 24" you will get more space to work in, though the 23" panel should be easier to drive in games.
Both panels are great, but I'd go 16:9 myself.

I wasn't meaning that, stretching an image would be nasty. I suppose what I was trying to say is that the extra field-of-view is really only beneficial on the horizontal (probably exceptions to this rule such as flight-sims) and so there is no field-of-view advantage as 16:9 and 16:10 24" monitors both have 1920 horizontal pixels.

I agree that a 16:9 would be nicer if it's for attaching to a PS3/XBOX though, only because it's the output res though. I think for PC gaming 16:10 is nicer. Although I would say that as I've just bought a 16:10 24" ;)
