So I am going to view a few properties (I am looking to rent) through this letting agent but I have got a bit spooked because the address of the letting agent is a PO Box number. Now I'm guessing that it's just a one man agent operating from his home who doesn't want his home address to be known. He has a London landline telephone number as the business number.

Does this sound dodgy?

He doesn't appear to be ARLA affiliated but I don't think that is that unusual.

What's his company name? I'll get my boss to check for you, we deal with countless lettings agencies in london.

^^^ why so? all you have to do is ask the Post Office for the home address of the Po box number, they have to give it to you.
I operated out of home for 12 years, why pay rent when you dont have to? reputaion is far more important.
