Noisy GTX 460 - which is quietest?

Got the EVGA GTX460 1GB for our HTPC, not realising it was an exhaust design. The rest of the case is so quiet that this is the only thing that can be heard, which has a sort of high pitched bearing whine at the lowest setting of 40%. It's too loud and the fan wont go lower that this.

Will the reference design cooled cards be quieter than this? Is the MSI one with it's mad fan really even quieter than that? (or is it louder at idle and quieter at load).

Basically I need the card (460 1gb) that will be quietest at idle, or at least on that is very quiet. There seems to be some debate over which this is. Any advice from current owners or others that have done the same 'hunt' would be appreciated.

Depends if you overclock or not. Gigabyte and MSI Cyclone have superior coolers. There's also MSI HAWK but that's a card for enthusiasts :)

Go for the MSI Cyclone GTX460 1GB. The fan is VERY quiet according to reviews and people that own it.

Cool, thanks, the Gigabye dual fan one seems to be rated well too, anyone got that?

@ Mr Krugga - I'm only gonna clock up to 800mz (which it seems they all do) and I'm not really too fussed about load noise, just idle.

Yeh, if you read the main 460 thread, quite a few peeps (me included) have the Giga. It's totally quiet at 40-60%, anything after that is just a "whoosh" of air sound, not a whine.

Great card, as is the MSI going by the people here who have one. Can't go wrong with either.

Oh yeh, don't know where you got they only go to 800Mhz, see my sig. (and read the main thread!)

No need for a new thread tbh.

Gigabyte 460 is quietest out of the box.

MSI pretty much the same noise level if you adjust the profile in Afterburner (as by default MSI have set it rather aggressive) :)

I recall reading something along the line thate Gigabyte's cooler is effective, cool and quiet if only using one of them, but in SLI the 2nd card would block the airflow to the 1st card and increase the temp quite a bit...whereas the temp for MSI Cyclone in SLI seem to be affected not as much.

I've got the Giga 460 - it's a great card. Very quiet, in fact it's quieter than the 5850 I had beforehand. Sure enough when you overclock it it does become more audible, but that's to be expected. At 40% fan and normal clocks it's virtually silent.

I think you should rather read what he posted - all 460s seem to do 800MHz just fine and that's all he needs.
