No it's not fox. Compared to my bm auto it's not as good a car overall agreed, but the auto box in the focus is more than capable of being a decent car.
As someone with many many miles of hatchback auto driving experience, they are fine for what they are.
 
It's a 4 speed auto, it's shocking. They hardly sold any and the ones for sale on the used market seem to be LESS than the Manual equivalent (when I last looked). Want a Focus, buy a manual. Want an auto, buy another car.

He majority of ones sold were motability I expect and the ones I see around are more expensive than the 1.6 manuals.

Like anything, there are better cars out there, doesn't mean the focus is bad though

I've owned 2 focus autos and driven many miles in hire car auto focus' , astras, mercs etc. If all you drive is manuals then yes a small auto will feel crap, but in comparison to other autos it's not bad, just not preferable to a manual.
 
Auto Mercs etc are fine. Auto Focus are not. I accept the fact you might think they are fine but some people think a Hyundai i10 is fine so it doesnt really change anything.

We all know your standards are very different than most of the general public (they buy i10s), therefore what you would consider crap a lot of people would consider perfectly fine.
 
No, the auto focus is fine. The merc b class autos I've driven have been worse in comparison, the c class seemed fine though (both petrols) no idea if same box in each.

not bad, stay away from the jap scrap as its more than likely had the bag driven out of it like most of them in Ireland.

anything heavey like this with that engine size is grand as long as you dont invest in a 1.4ltr version.

coil pack gones very quickly on Fords.

is just as a run about??? if so that would do the jobby

it is my second car, my first being a 2003 rover 25 (which is now just falling apart, hence the new car)

i must admit the criticism of the automatics peformance im not hugely fussed about from a speed point of view, i dont care if it doesnt go 0 - 60 in a remarkable time, i do long distance driving though so i do care about fuel economy, which isnt sounding great here =/
 
I don't see a 4 speed auto being particularly economical. In fact the quoted combined figure for the Auto is 35 and the Manual is 40. Quite a drop.
 
DSG is the only auto box i've driven that I personally rate, if all auto's were *that* good then a serious case could be made for the majority of people (clearly not everyone) not needing a manual box. You'll find them in VW/Audi/Seat/Skoda/Bugatti and iirc Ferrari are taking them on now so something has got to fit your requirements in that lot :P Sadly they're not so great in the snow but few are. Merc make decent auto box's but i'd strongly suggest avoiding Ford and it's 4 speed offering, even Vauxhall make a better job of auto's.

My experience comes from someone who's other half has to drive an auto or randomly dislocate her shoulder in a Mel Gibson/Leathal Weapon esque manner when changing gear, she's had one Ford and will never have another unless they change the auto box to something significantly better.
 
It's not very economical, and tbh the base spec ones aren't that comfortable on long distances (I'd class long distance as over 200 miles). Thing is, do you do long distance all the time or not very offen?
 
Er quite regularly, i do a 80-100 mile drive most weekends. my current cars stated fuel economy is 41mpg, so if the auto's isnt far off that i can live with it?

Quite.

Although I thought most of my driving was around town, in terms of actual mileage covered most of my mileage is on the M5 where I literally engage 5th as I pull onto the A38 at Plymouth and don't touch the gearbox again until the M50 junction, unless I stop for a break.
