Going to sell my Fiesta ST this year, looking to replace it with something that's:

1) Bigger in Size

2) Smaller in engine size

3) A lot more economical (mileage and tax/insurance)

4) Cheap to maintain

Potentially could be commuting 50-80 miles per day. Need something professional looking, but economical and cheap to maintain.

I was thinking Ford Focus, Citroen C4, maybe a Golf but think a decent one might be out of budget.

I don't want to go down the BMW/Audi/Merc route as my budget wouldn't allow for a decent example, that and I doubt they are cheap to run.

Budget: 5-7k

Don't want anything the size of a Mondeo, so small family hatchbacks.

Up a size would be a Focus - the perfect car for the OP :)

You can pick up a facelift 1.6 or 1.8 for around £8k for a good one, go private and may find one within budget.

How economical is the 1.6L? We talking petrol or diesel?

I need to strike the balance between cost of the vehicle to cost of insurance/running costs/tax.

I live in the country so overtaking is almost impossible so out right speed doesn't concern me now.

Petrol. Various people on here claim 38-42MPG out of the 1.6 - I didn't get that much, but I have a particularly unusual usage pattern. I suspect if you're doing regular long journeys then over 40 is achievable.

How is going up a size from a Focus or a C4 a Focus?

Anyway it dont matter i see a Mondeo is too big.

What tax were you paying? Not that it matters that much, but mine has gone up from £120 when I bought the car to £200+, damn those eco warriors!!!

I am environmental guy too, so rocking up in my Fiesta ST doesn't look like I take the industry seriously either hehe

How about a MG ZR?

5k will get you a very nice one!

EDIT: what about a audi A3 or BMW 120i/d, 7k will be poverty spec but still not a bad car if you want something small.

I would rather get a better spec Focus than a poverty spec "badge" car.

Parts for the Focus are cheap, it's cheap to run and seems like my best bet....

Anything other than a Focus that might be worth looking at?

Honda Civic? Astra? erm... Megane?

buy a mondeo and watch where you put it,

not much bigger than a focus tbh

focus 4337 mm 2019 mm 1500
mondy 4778 mm 2078 mm 1500 mm

40cm longer and 5cm wider hardly a massive amount tbh and you will get so much more car for your money

hhmmm now you put it like that, My Dad's mondeo estate is nice but I think the estate makes it look much bigger....

is it sensible to get such a big car if it's only me in it 99% of the time?
