CPU Question - To Have Six or Four.

Hey Guys,

I am looking at building my first computer and have been researching on which CPU to get for my system. The system will be used for gaming in all its aspects, as I am a Games Development Student at University that means compiling thousands of lines of code and rendering as well as exploding monsters and pwning n00bs (for research of course :D).

My question is, would it be worth is to splash out the extra gold, silver and bronze for two extra cores? Also, the eternal question, AMD or Intel? I would like to go with AMD as it is far less money than Intel, and I am a poor student :(, but willing to spend a little extra if it is worth it in the long run.

The budget I'm looking at spending is about £750-£1000.

Cheers

Is it really? The i5-750 is similar price as the 1055T. Look at the database here:
http://www.anandtech.com/bench/CPU/2

I think he the OP means in a apples-to-apples case.

In a case of games few use 4 cores let amone 6 cores so a hexacore makes little sense for gaming atm. I dont know how well threaded your compilers are so cant make a judgment call there.

Look for reviews of the 1055T

Here...a little over £1000 and delivered

This does not include Win7 or monitor, so if you need them as well within the budget, someone's probably gonna recommend something like a AMD Phenom II 955BE with a GTX460 1GB and a lesser case and PSU something like that to fit the budget I think.

AMD may currently have a longer socket life with AM3 if that is a consideration.

andy.

Yes AMD AM3 still longer as Intel is about to replace the 1366 by using new Socket 2011 also new 1155 that would begin from Q4 2010 to 2011 so best to check and may change if you think about

the new AMD Fusion that will using new AM3+ may support for AM3 as backward but it not yet to be confirm - I feel that I would think the new CPU can using AM3 motherboard with update BIOS

May be. But the problem is "compatable" and "runs well" are two different things. While the Bulldozer might "run" on the current 700/800 range chipset AM3 board, I have serious doubt of how much overclock can people get out of it. The chances are if people want to overclock the Bulldozer CPU well, they would most likely need to buy the new chipset motherboard (900 chipset may be) that release alongside the CPU anyway.
