Mafia II Thread

I don't get the comparisons with GTA. That's a sandbox game, Mafia isn't.

Well done. You've stumbled upon the point...

If you're going to make an open world, there has to be an element of sandbox play. If not, you need to back it up with a fantastic story and a variation of in-depth game mechanics.

Chapter 9 now, loving it.
Like the driving, the music is fantastic and varied.
Like the shooting and cover, controls are intuitive.
Like the graphics, nice variation, day/night - period snow / sun.
No frustrating / annoying bits, unlike the Rockstar games.

Agree with others about the gameworld and story though. It does seem to feel unfinished at times, like there's bits missing. While I wouldn't want side missions in it, I would have liked the story to be more expansive and accurate to the Mafia. The first Mafia felt much more immersive, like being in a world of the Sopranos/ Goodfellas, this doesn't give off anything like that.

Having said that, it's still a very enjoyable game to me.

So not as good as the first one, but I never really expected it to top that. Still a good 8/10 here.

from what ive played so far and from peoples oppinions this game could really benefit from some top notch DLC, does anyone know if there is any planned other then the free ps3 stuff (ive downloaded it but i haven touched it yet).

I only played the demo and agree with Killswitch. Looks and plays like a clone that came out around GTA 4 or Vice City era.

I read somewhere (can't remember where) that dlc for this game was going to be PS3 exclusive, or was that a gross exaggeration? I only ask because it's what's putting me off getting this game as I only have a 360 and by the sounds of it, it's going to need some good dlc.

Finished this last night. Great game with a good story. A bit short, and not enough opportunity given to explore the whole city (in terms of missions), and the ending was a little abrupt, but still thoroughly enjoyed it :)

Mafia 1 still the better game though.

I thought the DLC was PS3 exclusive, too. Don't know whether it's forever exclusive or just timed.

The Betrayal Of Jimmy is the exclusive PS3 DLC, based on recent definitions it could well be timed as you say.

i think some dlc will be PS3 only for a while but the manual for the 360 version has an ad for "jimmys vendetta" "coming soon to xbox live"

Completely agree. I both loved and hated the nod to Mafia 1 in Chapter 14 as well (loved the fact it revisited the story from the 1st game, hated what you actually had to do), and the ending was definitely a bit abrupt. Really enjoyed it though, but will likely sell it now while the value is still high and put the money towards Dead Rising 2.

I borrowed this from a mate yesterday and im on chapter 3. I'm really enjoying it. I'm not trying to compare it to other 'similar' games and I'm probably enjoying it more because of this.

I give it a 6/10 probably. There seems to be so much of the city that simply goes unused. It is like they were planning GTA:IV and then simply said "OK, six years development is too long. Let's just strip all the side missions away and do a main story thread." Even the artists must have doubled their work having to paint the entire city in snow and then in summer greenery.

I am on Chapter 6 and so far I have not seen any Wanted posters? They are shown as collectibles in the stats menu, but I have walked around and cannot see anything obvious I have missed. What am I doing wrong? There is 150 of them so it seems weird I have not run into a single one whilst doing missions, whereas I always see Playboy Magazines a lot.

The Wanted posters are too obscure. You're going to have to methodically go through with a guide if you want to platinum this game, rp. I found zero on my travels! :D

Disappointing. I walked around in a lot of places and hoped an on screen prompt would appear ("like press square to collect poster"etc).

I know this isn't a sandbox game but I want something to collect!!

Maybe I will play through the game a second time and look for them.

i cant seem to do anything, when i drive the car it falls through the floor into a sky and the car keeps spinning..... i cant get to my missions.... does anyone have this problem too?

Not sure what's going on there, one things for sure though whatever the flaws in this game the good bits pretty much killed my appetite for FPS MP for the time being. Not sure what to play now.

EDIT: I guess this might do, out September 7th

Got my copy on Tuesday, played the first 'intro' mission (liked that), and I've done the first proper mission for your character's mate - so only scratched the surface really.

It feels [to me at least] a lot like Mafia, and I played that to death on PC, so I'm really impress with #2 so far, I don't quite get the comments about the city feeling 'dead' that I have read in some player reviews, it's like the original and GTA, so where’s the problem? I liked the little touches, for example the two guys trying to get their mate to come out for a drink (wife shouting out the window) and the husband and wife having an argument over the car – these, although scripted, help to make the city feel alive I think.

Really looking forward to playing it some more...
