Fiesta ST > Grownup adult car, but which?

Focus 1.6 TDCi Titanium sounds like it would fit the bill nicely. Some will say it's not worth going diesel for 15k a year, but the TDCi's are so common in the Focus they don't really command much of a premium on the purchase price, and they are pretty reliable with a Bosch injection system they don't tend to give many problems.

The other option would be to go for the 1.6 Ti-VCT petrol engine. These are a decent improvement over the standard 1.6 and are actually more economical. You'll still only see around 40mpg at best though, on a run the diesel will do mid 50's quite easily.

I think if you want a professional car why does it have to be so new
Plenty of nice 3 series and volvo estates etc about for around 8 k with diesels etc

Ahh you want a small car

A3 then

I'd go for a focus if you're sure you want to change.

Although I must agree with fox and say I'd keep the ST :) Its a great little car imo.

I think the other options mentioned in this thread will be a downgrade.

Its your car. Don't replace it with something boring so you can fit in with your boring co-workers.

Well then I apologies. You really need to put more thought into how you post.

I had comments from co-workers about my car all the time about it being boy racerish and over powered.

I work/ed in the environment sector so it maybe wasn't the most appropriate choice when I bought it but I had my fun with it, now want to sell it for something more adult and a little bigger and better on the fuel.

Taking car advice from a load of smelly tree hugging hippy clowns. Go you.

The 1.6 TDCi engine is reliable, but only to a point.

It has a huge design flaw, which causes oil to carbonise and block the pipes for the turbo.. Ford had to issue a TSB, and redesign the oil feed and return pipes, benjo bolts etc to try and rectify this issue, but it remains to be seen if it actually does work as a long term fix. a lot of people have had turbo failures because of this. Some people have even had repeat turbo failures as the repair hadnt been done according to the ford TSB.

If your going down the TDCi route i'd go for the 1.8.

It can't be that bad an engine though, BMW use it in the Mini Cooper D, Volvo use it in their S40 and V50 and various others.

Yes, but that is the industry I work in :D It's all about economy and being nice to the planet.

Surely they wouldn't be satisfied by anything other than a bicycle?

A car is a really nasty piece of work, planet resource wise. Even the most ecomentalist friendly car, isn't really - it's just a compromise. You can drive a Prius like an arse and get worse mpg than an M3 driven gently. The only way either of them are actually non-harmful to the environment is when they aren't running.

Get whatever you want, stick a "hybrid" sticker on the side, sorted.

Seat Leon Cupra diesel.
About as refined as a tractor and the plastic VAG parts are made of cheese, but totally worth it.
Focus 1.6 TDCi makes the baby jebus cry.

I know this, you know this. The pool cars are hybrid's yet only do motorway miles, it would make more sense to buy diesel cars or solely use the train.

I need to play office politics so I'm kinda stuck.

You just work there, it doesn't mean you have to submit to their asinine ideas. It's got nothing to do with saving the planet anyway, it's just another industry out to make a profit, which I have no problem with at all ...what I do have a problem with is when they try and dress it all up in a pretty frock and try and make people believe there is any other motivation beyond the bottom line.

Maybe it's as much about trying to convince themselves it's all for a good cause as well ..end of the day though driving a hybrid, fitting solar panels to your house and buying carbon offsets is going to make sod all difference ...other than make some people richer and others feel a bit better about themselves.

It's a growth industry though that's for sure, I must look into getting in on it, I smell profit.

Surely in the environmental sector you won't get approval on a car until you turn up in a Prius or a Polo Bluemotion? :p

I've got a MK4 Golf and miss having a bit of fun and am now looking at going back in size to a Fiesta ST.. doh! :) I think they're not too boy racery if not stickered up to the eyeballs and they're still worth a few quid so not too many charvers have 'em but I don't doubt for a second a bigger more grown up car will be a lot comfier if thats what you want now. Thats one thing which makes me wonder... mines nice at speed, little cars in general....aren't.

I actually think a clean looking Fiesta ST will look a bit more "upmarket" than a pretty boring looking Focus. God they're not pretty cars until you get to Focus ST territory IMO.

Hate to say it but I think a Golf would look more like what you're after, for car park purposes, than a Focus.

As for fuel economy, the Fiesta ST won't be much worse than a 1.6 petrol Focus. Unless you're using the ST to it's full potential. I'll get ~40mpg in my ST with a steady ride to work now I'm working closer to home. ~34mpg with a combination of spirited and 'normal' driving which I still think is pretty reasonable?

LOL - Best recommendation ever :D

So an MG ZR is going to be cheaper to run and more grown up than a Fiesta ST?

How is a ZR going to be more expensive? They're dirt cheap to run :p

For the love of God I feel for anyone that owns one... the interior is made of cheese and everything is glued on... for the first 10k. Then it's starts raining trim :D

just a quickie, you need a car more economical than the ST, whats the current mpg? i didnt think those things were too thirsty

It's not too bad for economy. Might research the Golf, I just want something a bit bigger, more comfy and a bit more adult.

I like the Fiesta but I think I have out grown it. I have never thrashed it or even driven it spirited, I'm not that kind of car guy...

Golf would be nice, If my budget allows a decent one.

I'm not getting a prius, they ain't cheap to maintain and are crap for long journeys, a good diesel is better.
