Kind of depends on what the show will be about.

If it is heavily deep rooted with mythologies, traditions and such then it helps to know a little about them to get an idea. Not only just Japanese, but many other cultures from around the world, as there are many series out there that likes to blend them together, especially the Mecha and Sci-Fi genres.

When it comes to all the usual designs for female characters, most of the time it's just there mainly to appeal to the male Otaku or for the sake of "Moe". These days it does tend to get very generic, especially when they are just there for no reason or cheap purposes, but some are quite appealing.

Hehe, quite apppealing, you can say that again...

Allthough i tend to choose the less sexy girls, like Real from Ergo Proxy,or Youko from 12 Kingdoms.Just because they don't measure up to the "big-breasted,blonde barbie"type of anime girl.

just finished watching she: the ultimate weapon, hmmm, feels almost anti-climatic, and slightly confusing too, maybe thats just me lol might have to go through it all again some day lol

Can anyone advise me on Studio Ghibli releases?

I want to collect all the DVDs. I have seen Kikis Delivery Service, Spirited Away and My Neighbour Tortoro however I'm not aware of all the others I know exist.

Is there a definitive list out there? I'd prefer Japanese audio with English subs however when seen on Film 4 I don't particulary mind the English dubbed versions if the latter isn't available natively.

I don't watch much of anything else Anime wise however I have seen Akira and have Ghost in the Shell to watch. I've also seen all the Wangan Midnight and Initial D episodes. Can anyone reccomend my anything else along those lines?

That Fumoffu vid is HILARIOUS need to find that :D

Just saw Occult Academy 9.Why is that when Asians want to play with your emotions they almost always use kids?Feeling kinda sad now :(

Oh dear, that's not good Dup .... that's kind of the position I was in around 5-6 years ago when a friend lent me a copy of Spirited Away ... it was all downhill from there ... make sure you have plenty of space and start saving :)

Regarding the Ghibli list above; be aware that Only Yesterday and Ocean Waves are slice of life films as opposed to the fantasy of most of the Ghibli films, (I like Ocean Waves but find Only Yesterday a bit meh). Grave of the Fireflies is very depressing and can be quite hard to watch whilst My Neighbours the Yamadas is just plain weird at times.

Other things it is worth looking at:
The Girl Who Leapt Through Time is an excellent film.
Code Geass (original and R2)
Eureka Seven (the series is a lot better than the film (and now available in two £15 parts))
Full Metal Panic (first and third series are a mixture of action and comedy, the second series Fumoffu is comedy)
Samurai 7
Samurai Champaloo
Burst Angel

edit:
Should also add:
Steamboy ... along the same vein as Ghibli
The Little Norse Prince ... a kind of pre-Ghibli directed by Isao Takahata with Miyazaki as one of the animators
The Castle of Cagliostro ... a Lupin III caper film co-written and directed by Miyazaki (also pre-Ghibli)

I'll also add the general reminder (not just aimed at Dup) that the "complete collections" of Ghibli films on auction sites are bootlegs rather than genuine releases.

:( the US BR remastered release of Full Metal Panic Fumoffu appears to have been delayed until October ...

Well, watched Banner of the Stars II today as I had a day off ... not a bad continuation but felt weaker than Crest of the Stars and Banner of the Stars season 1. Still not a bad sci-fi set of series but feels like it would make a better set of novels where the story could be developed in greater depth a la David Weber.

Need to find something to watch this evening next ;)

Also read the two GA manga over the last two nights.

edit: Decided to go with a re-watch of Romeo x Juliet ... damn episode 7 always gets me ...

Start re-reading the ToHeart manga in a bit ...

Well it's coming to that time again, charts and sites are out for the Autumn seasons; ref:

(hopefully that'll work, imageshack is blocked here at work so I'm working blind here ... if not I'll fix it later)

and also see:
http://countdown.mandragon.info/upcoming.html

At the moment I'll express an interest in:

Stardriver Radiant Takuto
Kuragehime
Bakuman
Soredemo Mawatteriu (*)
Shinryaku! Ika Musume
The World God Only Knows (*)
Otome Youkai Zakuro
Yosuga No Sora (**)
A Certain Magical Index S2 (**)
Sora No Otoshimono Forte (**)
To Love Ru Motto
My Little Sister Can't Be This Cute (*)
MM! (*)
Fortune Arterial Red Promise (**)
Hidimari Sketch OVA (**)
ToHeart2 adnext OVA (**)
Tantei Opera
Yumeiro Prof

Where the number of *'s indicates the probability of actually following the series/OVA. But as usual I'll probably end up only watching a couple of them anyway due to time contraints :(

Index S2, Sora no Oppai S2, To-Love-Ru S2 and My Little Sister Can't Be This Cute (I know for the voice cast for this one will make it hilarious, Azu-nyan + Tomoya!), are what I am looking forward to.

The new Super Robot Taisen OG is making me squeal like a little boy as well.

Have to admit that although I have listed them i haven't actually got around to watching the first seasons of Index or Otoshimono and only watched the first season of ToLoveRu as I picked up the DVD release.

I do think that I'll try to watch Yosuga No Sora as it sounds interesting but I don't know how many of the others will actually be seen ...

At the moment these seem to be ones I may like....
Stardriver Radiant Takuto (It's Bones and I seem to like their shows)
Ironman (purely due to it being ironman lol)
Psychic Detective Yakumo
Letter Bee Reverse - really liked the first one so hopefully this will follow suit
Tagainu No Chi (I think thats what it says)
Hyakka Ryouran Samurai Girls
The World God Only Knows (Plot reminds me a little of Nyan Koi)
A certain Magical Index (first series pretty good, the side story of 'scientific railgun' wasn't so good)
To Love Ru Motto
Sora no Otoshimono Forte (first series was pretty good, except for stupid 'tomoki' bits)
Fortune Arterial Red Promise
Super Robot Taisen the inspector (it's mecha and super robots!)

And obviously - Gundam 00 and unicorn movie/ova's as they're due out soon too :)

Normally try to watch the first 1 or 2 episodes of the ones that look good (sometimes ones which aren't listed too) and then keep watching if I do like it :)

From some of the promo videos out so far

Index S2 looks like it should be interesting, i liked both the Index and Railgun series.

Sora No Otoshimono looks like it should be a fun watch as well.

Star Drivers looks like the Gurren Lagann but done by Bones instead of Gainax, but it looks very nice. Ill be watching this one i think.

Will also be watching the second season of Letter Bee i think, although i need to finish the first. It was a nice setting i thought, simple but original. Which is often the best approach.

I do hope something comes out with a real 'wow' factor. I can't think of much in recent months that has really stood out that much for me. Angel Beats and Durarara came close, but were let down by bad pacing i thought.

So NISA have announced their release dates for the rest of the year. The second halves of Toradora and Persona Trinity Soul have moved up by two days and Our Home's Fox Deity and Pandora Hearts first sets are now due in November. I may pick up the former of the November titles but haven't really decided as yet. No news on the replacement disks for the first half of Toradora yet though, had hoped they would be shipped out before the second half of the series :(

Anyway ... finished rewatching Romeo x Juliet this evening. Really, really good series with a excellent combination of fantasy-action and, of course given the title, romance. Very nice series which I would definitely recommend.

Finished the ToHeart manga last night too ... rather dated now but still a fun read.
